With the Oscars just around the corner, we couldn’t resist putting our own spin on Hollywood’s biggest night. But instead of sticking only to films released this year, we’ve decided to cast a wider net to include movies and shows. From timeless classics to recent blockbusters, we’ve created our own nomination list that celebrates the best of the best – according to us. Because why let the Academy have all the fun?
First up, we have two categories that showcase the artistry and creativity behind storytelling: Best Visual Effects and Best Screenplay. These awards recognized the incredible work that goes into crafting compelling narratives and stunning visuals. And tonight, we are excited to have Ayah, with her keen eye for perfection, sharing her two film or series nominees, so let’s see which ones she has selected!
For Best Visual Effects, I’m thrilled to nominate a show that has captivated audiences around the world, including myself—no small feat since I’m pretty picky and hard to please! This series has transformed television with its breathtaking effects, bringing dragons, giants, and White Walkers to life. The chaos and heartbreak felt so personal; the very being of my obsession lies in this show. It has taken us beyond the Wall and deep into the heart of Westeros. My nominee is… Game of Thrones!
My next nominee for Best Original Screenplay—a category that celebrates the most creative, original, and captivating scripts—is a show that originated in Spain and has become a global phenomenon. This series has redefined the heist drama with its intense storytelling, high-stakes drama, and mind-blowing plot twists that keep us on the edge of our seats. The way it plays with my emotions is absolutely crazy; I've found myself screaming and crying in front of my screen more times than I can count. Many shows and films have tried to replicate this masterpiece, but none have come close. My nominee is… La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)!
And now it’s time for the showstoppers: Best Picture and Best Actor. These categories are all about the films and performances that left an impact, which is why Fasia is taking the lead here. As a chronic film watcher, Fasia will be able to tell you all what picks have captivating stories and unforgettable performances. Get ready for some tough competition!
Best motion picture definitely goes to the 2013 film, Prisoners. I watched this film for the 4th time a few weeks ago, and I was reminded once again of how amazing it is. The film features a captivating storyline, intense performances, and an interesting plot twist. When I say that I stared at my phone screen for a few minutes after the movie ended, I mean it! And can I just mention how superior the cast lineup is? Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal delivered such powerful performances, bringing raw emotion to the film. Prisoners undoubtedly wins an Oscar in my book.
People can say what they want about Timothée Chalamet, but they’d be lying if they claimed his performance in *Dune: Part Two* wasn’t exceptional. There’s no one else I’d rather see as Paul Atreides. Chalamet’s portrayal conveys both strength and vulnerability, allowing the audience to connect with Paul’s internal struggles. This role is yet another example of his incredible range, as he consistently delivers outstanding performances. I seriously believe Timothée Chalamet is the top contender for Best Actor.
Last, but definitely not least, is Sofia! Here to shine a light on two categories that address talent both in front of the camera and behind the scenes: Best Actress and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. From exceptional performances that bring characters to life to creative geniuses who make actors and actresses look flawless. Get ready for some bold film picks that prove magic happens on stage and in the makeup chair!
We once knew and loved her as Anna from Frozen and as the voice of Gossip Girl. This year a Netflix Original: Nobody Wants This was released starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, who you may remember as the loveable Dave from Gilmore Girls. Kristen Bell's portrayal of Joanne is very reminiscent of her previous roles as outgoing and cheerful. On the other hand, this outstanding performance gives us a character, who as many can relate to, is just trying to figure out her life. This one-season Netflix gem captures the absurdities of modern love and the beauty in its chaos.
My pick for best makeup and hairstyling for a 2024 film will hands down have to go to Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Having even come out with a makeup line to replicate Priscilla Presley's iconic eyeliner and eye makeup, this movie depicts Priscilla Presley's life not only through real and raw moments, but through the evolution of her looks. This movie meticulously captures the hairstyles and makeup looks of the 60s and 70s. Using makeup to depict the phases in Priscilla’s life as she gets to know Elvis and begins to drastically change her appearance for his personal gaze. Elvis' iconic slick back pompadour hairstyle was seen throughout the movie.
