The music industry is a challenging field. Many have connections or they work their way up to get to where they want to be in the future. There are some who have started as a Disney actor and switched over to the music industry later on in their career. Sabrina Carpenter, who many may know her as “Maya Hart” in Girl Meets World or as the voice of “Vivian” in Sofia The First, started off as a Disney actor rather than a singer. Even though she became known as an actor, music was her passion. Compared to others, it has taken her a while to be recognized for her music. By being a Disney actor or just an actor in general, it helped get her name out there even though it also had its flaws. This included her name being tied to Disney and people still having this kid image of her when they see or hear her name, it came to a certain point where she felt it was time to shed the image and reinvent herself.
Carpenter’s journey from being a Disney star to an actor has been a remarkable and a successful one. Her journey started at a young age when she got her first role in 2011 as a guest role in Law and Order SVU as a character named Paula. Then after, she was featured in tv shows and films like Noobz, Orange Is the New Black and Austin & Ally. She was also a voice actor in the show Phineas and Ferb, and Sofia the First amongst other shows. Anyhow, in 2014 she finally got her biggest role, one of the leading roles in Disney’s Girl Meets world as Maya Hart, which got her name out there and made her the known actor she was. It also made it possible for those who watched the show to recognize her name, and also possible for those who didn't know her name to recognize her face when she made her debut single which was released before the show, Girls Meets World aired, soon after her debut EP was released.
When being part of the music industry, it could go one out of two ways; people start listening to your music and like what you place out or it takes a while to get the attention you need in order to succeed. In Carpenter's case, it took her a while to draw attention to her music, to get others interested in her. Carpenter's debut single and EP was released a decade ago which fit her Disney image and the audience. At a certain point, she changed genres as she was getting older and maturing, just like those who enjoyed ‘Eyes Wide Open” were maturing. Her later albums such as “EVOLution”, “Singular act I”, and “Singular Act II”, were not as popular due to the fact she wasnt getting recognition she needed to become the pop artist she is now.
Being the opener for Taylor Swift for her Latin American tour had helped her a bit since those who didn’t know who she was beforehand, but then enjoyed her performance and music, would later research who the artist was. The drama that happened between Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Joshua Bassett in 2021 had also placed her name out there for people to see who she is. Aside from that, her music alone drew attention due to its lyrics and catchiness and people liked what she placed out in the past two years.
Sabrina Carpenter’s future is looking pretty well for her as she made many accomplishments. In February 2021, she made it into the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time placing at number 48 with her song ‘Skin’ and in 2023 her song “Feather” peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. In April 2024 her song “Espresso” also peaked on Billboard Hot 100 at number 3, later her single “Please Please Please” also debuted in Billboard Hot 100. Her album “Short N Sweet” which came out in late Sugust debuted at number 1 on Billboard 200. Apart from that, she also won many major music awards in 2024 which includes MTV Video Music Award for Song of the Year, Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Viral Song, and MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song and also got 6 Grammy nominations. With all these accomplishments within a short amount of time, she has a pretty bright future and many more accomplishments to come. Sabrina Carpenter’s career is a perfect example of how talent can be both Short n’ Sweet, leaving a memorable impact with every song.
