The Monster That Lived Amongst Us All, Has Now Been Caught

By Shadale Brown

After the 14 year long search for the killer of 11 missing women, in Gilgo Beach, Long island, Rex Heurermann was found. The neighborhood is still shaken by the thought of a killer living right under them.

Rex Heurermann, Prime Suspect

The search started December 2010, but picked up in February 2022  in Suffolk County due to police commissioner, Rodney Harrison. As in an interview with the press near where one of the victims was found, Rodney K. Harrison showed his commitment to solving this case by saying “ We will not rest until we bring those accountable to justice”.

Harrison went on to say in an interview with the press outside the court where Heurermann was being held for pre-trial that  Heurermann is “A demon that walks among us, and a predator that ruined families.” Other News reporters state that Heurermann is a six foot architect towering over everyone in the courtroom.

Rex was firstly suspected last year in March of 2022 for the murder of Costello after linking him to a pickup truck and eyewitness views. He appeared in a pre-trial conference September 20th,2023 and was charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemey, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello.

In the pre-trial, a reporter from Court Tv news stated when Rex Heurermann was leaving the court he looked around at all the cameras in the room and at other reporters and gave a slight smile before exiting the courtroom. Many people in the general public were angered and questioned why he did this. Most thought it was very inappropriate considering the charges being put against him making some even question what he is hiding behind that smile.

Rodney Harrison, Police Commissioner

However, inside the Heurermann home after a 12 day search police removed 287 firearms found under the home in a vault which investigators found he only had a permit for 92 of them. This home was one Heurermann shared with his wife and 2 kids. His wife has now filed for a divorce and asked the court to release the weapons from the home

Later it was discussed that “Shannon Gilbert” made a 911 call that someone was trying to murder her on May 1st ,2010 around 4:15am. The call lasted 22 minutes. Her final words on that call that night was “Somebody’s after me— please,” before ending the call.

The call was not released earlier due to police commissioner Rodney Harrison finding that it may tamper with police evidence and might corrupt any leads or details that this case might have had or has had.

The general public has questions like “Where is Rex Heuermann now?” and “How is he acting in prison?" Well it's evident from News 12 (Bronx)  that he is being held at The Suffolk County Correctional Facility in a 60 foot square cell; and he doesn’t really talk to anyone except for basic needs of interaction with the corrections officer and someone that's incarcerated. Heurermann usually doesn’t move around the jail either and he also doesn’t spend a lot of time in a recreational area that he has access to throughout the day.

It has been a long run but the Gilgo beach community has finally been set to ease but is still haunted by the fact that a man they once knew as a friend turned out to be a monster who has been hiding in the dark for over a decade.
