Best Dressed at the 2025 Met Gala
The 2025 Met Gala theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" with a dress code of "Tailored for You," which celebrated the history and cultural influence of Black style, focusing on Black dandyism.
This look immediately caught my eye with the intriguing look of the deconstructed and reconstructed suit. Inspired by Trompe L'oeil, Monae's deconstructed suit was a beautiful optical illusion. Her outfit did not fall short when it came to incorporating aspects of dandyism with her black bowler hat and motorized monocle attached to the brim. Truly one of the best looks and outfit changes of the night.
Janelle Monáe
Teyana Taylor
Everything about this look is spectacular. From the shoulder pads to the feathered hat, to the zoot suit-inspired outfit, it was perfectly on theme. The words "Harlem rose" were stitched into her train which paid homage to the Harlem Renaissance. Her durag tied the entire look together by representing black identity, resistance, and cultural pride within the context of Black fashion and dandyism.
This royal blue entrance look was honoring and carrying
the torch of fashion for the late André Leon Talley who also famously wore a blue cape to the Met gala. This entrance look later was inspired by the influence of the Black Church which is perfectly in line with the theme of black dandyism. Domingo made it clear this look was not only fashion, but a statement.
Colman Domingo
Jodie-Turner Smith
This Burberry leather masterpiece is so extravagant and wonderfully executed it clearly is tailored for Jodie-Turner Smith. This look paid homage to a portrait of Black equestrian Selina Lazevski. Everything in this look is intentional including the very cinching at the waist of the coat which references the Victorian silhouette of Lazevski’s portrait.
I wasn't quite sure what to make of this look at first, but upon further inspection it truly opened my eyes. The rulers molded to Ortega's body embody the theme of Tailored For You not only in the way they fit, but in the use of the tool itself in the process of tailoring. A key aspect of black dandyism includes sharp tailoring and elegance, which this look exudes.
Jenna Ortega
Pusha T
This look truly shines and I'm not just talking about the thousands of hand sewn Swarovski crystals on Pusha T’s shoulders that create a waterfall-like effect with every movement. This look incorporates elegance and precision with the meticulous craftsmanship of each crystal.
