Top 5 Grand Theft Auto Games

By Quailan Casimir

Grand Theft Auto is one of the greatest and most successful game franchises ever. Going 30 years plus with 10 installments, each surpassing its predecessor and setting a template for the future of open world games, it’s no shock that GTA 6 is the most anticipated game sequel of all time. So here are the top five GTA games currently.

5. Grand Theft Auto 2

Following up the very first Grand Theft Auto, GTA 2 once again takes place in a fictional city where the players main goal is to cause as much havoc and mayhem as possible. For the most part, being the same as the original with same top-down perspective and the story pretty much being the same with a young criminal who just wants to commit crime for the sake of it, the game also had many improvements like the visual, car and buildings, colored lighting and even added a multiplayer mode where up to 6 people can compete on the maps design for multiplayer. GTA 2 would unfortunately mark the end of the 2D era in GTA but the 3D era would bring us some of the most iconic games in the franchise.

4. Grand Theft Auto 3

2001’s Grand Theft Auto 3 was a major shift for the franchise, switching from 2D to 3D following the same top-down perspective as the originals but this time set in a fictional version of New York called Liberty City. GTA 3 was praised for pushing the series into an exciting new direction. The game was extremely influential and propelled the gaming industry into non-linear open-ended games. The game featured an amazing soundtrack, and also its own original comedy channel called Chatterbox and even had two guest star appearances from Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Madsen.

3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Released only a year after GTA 3, 2002’s brought us back in time to 1986 in the fictional Vice City based on Miami, Florida. This story follows the protagonist Tommy Verceitti, with the narrative making nods to Scarface and the TV series Miami Vice. Rockstar Games had really the open world, non linear structure of the game’s predecessor by expanding on features and systems, introducing new abilities, items, mechanics, and even cheat codes.

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

2004’s GTA: San Andreas takes the number 2 spot with its groundbreaking open-world experience. Set in a massive open-world based on Los Angeles and other areas as we follow the Protagonist Carl CJ Johnson. San Andreas improved on earlier entries of GTA by getting rid of long loading screens between locations, introduced the ability to swim, as well as the ability to lose and put on weight, and an RPG system. San Andreas was  a massive improvement from the previous iterations with a well written story, memorable characters and missions, and once again an amazing soundtrack. San Andreas legacy would live on as Rockstar would use the same setting for the most popular GTA game in the series so far.

1.Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is widely considered the best game in the GTA franchise making the top of most lists. It truly was the peak of the series in terms of design, graphics, storytelling and characters. Released in 2013 GTA V stood the test of time and remains not only the most popular game in the series but the most popular game ever, thanks in part to GTA Online. The game took a unique approach by giving us 3 main characters, with 3 different backgrounds, perspectives, and gameplay abilities, and tied the story up with 3 different endings giving a fitting conclusion for each character. Taking place in the fictional version of Los Angeles, Los Santos, GTA V once again expands its open world and map giving us iconic locations, places to explore, people to meet and lots to do.
