Timothée Chalamet’s SAG Awards Speech:
Heartfelt or a Hint of Ego?
By Fasia, Ayah & Sofia
Timothée Chalamet is vastly known for his effortless charm, quirky persona, and undeniable talent, making him a favorite of many. But at the 2025 SAG Awards, his acceptance speech sparked strong controversy. Was his unfiltered confidence a breath of fresh air, or was it arrogant?
Taking the stage as one of the youngest to ever receive SAG’s Best Actor Award, Chalamet delivered a speech that grabbed the attention of his fans and critics alike.
After giving his customary thank yous he then followed with, “I can’t downplay the significance of this award because it means the most to me, and I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So I’m deeply grateful. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. It’s a little more ammo to keep going. Thank you so much.”
To many his speech was raw, unfiltered, and valued his declaration of pride. Many believe he had every right to embrace his goals and success unapologetically, given the dedication and immense talent that have brought him to this point.
Not everyone was sold. Some were shocked by his bold statements labeling the speech as self-congratulatory, and even egotistical. Many believed that his speech lacked humility and his openness on his desire to join the greats rubbed some the wrong way.
A prime example of this would be a host from The Social Podcast who didn’t hold back in saying, “Timothee that should’ve stayed in your journal. Inside thoughts. I’m sorry, Timothee, you know there’s like inside thoughts and outside thoughts and he just blurted it out, and I just thought to myself, you little brat.” Her critique received some support from those who felt Chalamet’s comments came off as entitled, but it also sparked some backlash.
Many people defended, arguing that ambition shouldn’t be mistaken for arrogance. Others went further, attacking the host personally, claiming she was only criticizing Chalamet because she hadn’t achieved his level of success.
Supporters of Chalamet also pointed out that he is already one of the most talented actors of his generation, with an impressive resume that includes A Complete Unknown, Dune, Wonka, Call Me by Your Name, Beautiful Boy, Little Women, Edgar Scissorhands, and so much more. Personally, we believe that the actor’s confidence is well-earned, and his journey suggests he could very well become one of the industry’s greats. After all, he deserves it.
So, was Chalamet simply being honest about his aspirations, or did he cross a bratty line? What do you think–was this a refreshing display of purpose, or should he really have kept this locked away in his journal? Either way, he is the one in possession of the award.
