Is Having Gym Everyday an Advantage?

By Pragon Chowdhury

School has been seen as a stepping stone in a person's academic journey. While school is beneficial for the mind, school can have a negative impact on a person's body. People are limited to the time they have in a day.

The perspective of the students and teachers here at Hillcrest should be included in this situation. The following student, Nicholas R. shared his perspective on the question, “ Do you believe that the majority of exercise during your week comes from gym class?” He stated that he believes this case isn’t true, as gym class only happens twice a week. “If it happened more than twice a week, then it would have an impact.” Another student named Quailan C. also believes that gym would have a larger impact on the person if it was multiple days. Finally, a student who chose to stay anonymous stated that he believes that students do not care about exercise outside of school, and making it mandatory every day would benefit students. When asked another question, “ Do you want to have gym class multiple times in a week?” All three of the students responded that they would want to have gym class every day if it was not mandatory and you could decide which days you would want to and not want to go. A final question was asked of all three students. “Do you enjoy the social aspect of gym class?” Nicholas R. responded with the following: “Yes, gym is one of the classes where you can have a lot of interactions with your friends and maintain socialization with peers.” Quailan C's response was the following: “Yes, I enjoy playing sports with my friends and being able to make more friends through gym activities.” The final response from the anonymous student was, “Yes, I believe that collaborating closely with each and every peer is definitely very important, beneficial, and an essential part of our lives." I  also believe that the more we communicate, the fewer issues we’ll have in our classes, and we will be able to cool off steam with one another.” With the need for perspectives in this situation, a teacher, Ms. Sherie, shared her perspective on the following questions: “Do you believe that students benefit from having physical education?” “Yes. Kids do benefit from Physical Education. Movement is life, when you challenge yourself mentally and physically it helps you succeed in life.”

As students focus more and more on their academic journey and less on their physical health, we should focus on adding more gym time during school to help benefit students mentally and physically and help them be able to focus more on their academic studies outside of school.
