How Different Music Genres Affect Mood in Different People

By Lyric Mckethan

Music is something that can be used to express yourself. There are many ways to express yourself in music, such as  relating to the words of songs, or maybe just expressing yourself with the different genres that music/artists have to offer you. Different genres of music can affect you emotionally and physically. Some students and staff members of the Hillcrest community have different opinions on how music can affect someone.

You may be familiar with the different music genres such as rock, pop, hip hop, R&Bs and the many other genres music and artists have to offer, but do you ever think of how they can affect you? If you are looking for the perfect genre to match your mood, then there are many to choose from. Classical music and pop music is shown to increase feelings of ease and decrease moods related to worry and tension which is good for someone who is constantly worried. Rock and metal music can make listeners feel energetic and happy.

In my opinion, different music genres can affect you in both good and bad ways, but it depends on what you listen to. For me hip hop can make me feel upbeat depending on the artist I listen to. However, sometimes it can heighten my emotions like anger.

Other music genres like pop can make me feel calm, happy and want to sing along and dance.

11th grader Sala says, “The way different music genres can affect you is based on how you handle different emotions. For example, when people listen to drill they become more aggressive or certain RnB makes you calm, it really depends on the artist or beat.”

12th grader Sara says, “It really depends on the person because if you feel sad and put on sad music it will make you more sad, but it depends on how the person is because you can play music based on how you feel.”

12th grader Chris  says, “Music targets a very important part of our 5 senses, that being hearing and since it's connected to our brains it can cause our feelings to mimic it. Softer music like jazz for example can make you calm opposed to energetic music like rock will make you hyper. Music sets the tone or mood around the environment or people.”

12th grader Nevaeh says, “It depends on what you listen to because if you listen to drill you will feel hype, if you listen to R&B you will be calm and in a lovey dovey mood, if you listen to sad music you can be sad it just depends on you.”

Mr Beauzile says,“It depends on what you like to listen to because different genres can make you feel different things.it depends on what you wanna listen to.”

Ms Fraizer says, “It's like watching a sad movie when you're sad it helps balance out your feelings. If you feel like dancing, listen to disco, if you're feeling romantic R&B, if you're feeling wild maybe rap and hip hop.”

Mr Francois  says , “It all depends on the type of music and how the person is feeling and what they will do in regards to what they're hearing. It's like a soft drug; it just affects your psyche.”
