Thank you for your participation and support of the first two Climate Action Days centered around energy conservation and waste, respectively.
On December 6, students learned what they could do to conserve energy and limit greenhouse gas emissions.
On February 7, students learned about waste in general and its effect on the environment, and how they are helping to divert waste from landfills by recycling.
Our third Climate Action Day is on Wednesday, April 17, with an emphasis on health, wellness, and green space.
April is known as Earth Month with Earth Day falling on April 22 this year. For the month of April, particularly on April 17, let us take some time to reflect on ways we can improve our health and wellness, enjoy green spaces and/or spend time outdoors appreciating nature and our planet.
The DOE Office of Energy & Sustainability has put together lesson plans related to our third Climate Action Day theme. Please consider using these lesson plans on April 17. You can access them by clicking on the link.
In mid-March, members of the green team along with science students in various SLCs participated in planting American beach grass to prevent dune erosion. The grass helps to hold the sand in place, preventing it from being swept away by the wind, storm, or waves. By reducing the impact of waves, storms, and wind, American beach grass helps to protect the shoreline of Coney Island, providing support to those who live in the area that could be affected by extreme weather and rising sea levels. The grass will also provide a habitat for some animals.
Students saw firsthand how the sand ended up in the front of homes in the area. Despite the chilly temperatures, our students put on their gloves and participated in a service that benefited the Coney Island community. Hillcrest was the first to arrive and the last to leave!
