Why AP Courses?

By Yeva Kubiak

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program was established over 40 years ago by the College Board, a national nonprofit organization. The AP Program consists of college-level courses in 31 subject areas. AP classes allow high school students to take more rigorous courses. Additionally, if they score well on the accompanying AP test, they can earn college credit and/or bypass some general education requirements once they enroll in college. Our school also offers such courses. I went and interviewed various people who work in this field, asking about their activities and opinions about the courses.

Ms. Olszewski,  Ap Composition and Language and AP Seminar teacher states “The AP courses are good for advancing your skills. They are great for having a little bit of age up when you go to college and you get to be around other students who care about the education.”  Mrs Frazier, AP Research teacher also states “They are good for college preparation, for expanding vocabulary, and getting ready for the SAT”.  When I asked “Are AP classes really worth it?

Ms. Olszewski also stated “the amount of learning that you do on them and working one on one with the teachers on AP courses . It is very valuable” Also when I asked about advice for students who are taking the AP class they responded “Communicate with your teachers, be respectful to deadlines, have a friend that you can talk to, and do all your reading."

An 10th-grade student, Stella Kaplan states “ I think the AP courses are really special because I think that the teachers really care about you and help you succeed and I think that the classes just so informing and really help me to become to better student and a better person.” Another 10th-grade student, Giulia Farias said “I think that it is good because if you work hard and you pass the exams and you got your credit, you are saving money that you could be spending on college”.  When asked “What gives you passion to study AP classes? “ they responded “Succeeding in life and making sure that we are great college students”. Another question that I asked was “Why did you decide to take AP classes?” and they responded “ AP courses look really good on our college application so why not?"

Mrs. Ramjan also added “The AP college courses not only prepare you for college but for classes in life, for higher education. And I think the most important thing is the Capstone Diploma.”

AP Capstone is a diploma program from College Board based on two year long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Participating in AP Capstone can help students stand out to colleges, become independent thinkers, develop key academic skills, and more. Students of our school have a great opportunity to have a great time during AP classes. If you are interested in development, finding like-minded people and good preparation for college, join the AP college courses!
