This is a story about Mr. Brown, who has been a math teacher for 21 years, 18 of which have been at Hillcrest High School. He is currently teaching 5 classes of Algebra 2 this year, but has taught Geometry and Algebra 1 in the past. The reason why he is teaching Algebra 2 this year is because he finds teaching older kids easier and more effective. Currently, he is part of the Teachers of Tomorrow SLC.
Growing up, Mr. Brown and his friends had always dreamed of becoming famous baseball players, until they realized that they were not good enough to carry out this profession. With a big desire of being around the sport, he had wanted to work for ESPN, but his camera shyness prevented him from pursuing that profession. In high school, Mr. Brown always excelled in math and also had a passion for history. While studying and attending the college SUNY Geneseo in the 2000s to become a history teacher, he transitioned to math because he hated writing lots of papers. While he did not consider his previous jobs as "real" work, he began his teaching career at 22. Before that, he had a variety of experiences, from working at a college and on a golf course during high school to being a stagehand for concerts. There, Mr. Brown spent summers working behind the scenes for shows like Britney Spears and Bon Jovi. Those gigs were exciting for him, especially when he got to be backstage and catch a glimpse of stars like Britney Spears. Despite his great experience in sports and as a stagehand, he always prioritizes his passion for teaching, no matter what.
Mr. Brown is married and has two boys whose names are Jaxson and Camden. His family has two dogs at home, a Boston Terrier and a Beagle Mixed. Nowadays, Mr. Brown does not have too many hobbies because his life revolves around his kids. His focus is on coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer for his kids, which means spending countless hours with them. He states "That is my life now, playing with them, watching them grow up and getting good because of something I taught them. That is my hobby.”
Mr. Brown has never been to the West Coast like California, but he has enjoyed exploring Wyoming and Colorado. He also had an amazing trip with his family to Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park in Montana a couple years ago, where he and his family were hiking and taking pleasure in nature. He also visited Canada a few times during college and he wants to visit Italy in the future due to the historical aspects that took place there. However, Australia interests him the most because of the wild nature and natural beauty. The outdoors is what he prefers. He is a huge fan of the band AC/DC which is an Australian rock band that formed in Sydney,1973. Their music has been variously described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal.
His advice to students in the Hillcrest High School is to "enjoy the time in the school, create bonds with others, socialize and interact with people, and surround yourself with the right people."
