Mr Pulgar’s Story
Mr. Pulgar has been a dedicated teacher at Hillcrest High School for 15 years, bringing his passion for education to young students. With backgrounds in Spanish, engineering, and computer science, his way into teaching was inspired by a scholarship at Queens College and his own experience learning English for free through a program in Manhattan. At the moment, as a Spanish and leadership teacher, software coordinator in the Health Science SLC, he continues to make a huge impact on his students.
A Path To Teaching
Teaching was not always the plan, but a scholarship at Queens College played a major role in his decision. More importantly, his belief that education is a noble profession that contributes to society, just as he was once given the opportunity to learn English.
Life Before Teaching
Mr. Pulgar had several jobs before stepping into the classroom, including work in a restaurant and as a cashier in a supermarket. These early experiences helped shape his strong work ethic and appreciation for education. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a king. While Mr. Pulgar's dream did not come true, he found fulfillment in teaching leadership, impacting students in a way that a king can never do. When asked how Mr. Pulgar balances his personal life and career as a teacher, his response is both simple and profound: “I do not balance. I just try to treat my personal life and my work with as much love as I can to be happy.” It shows how Mr. Pulgar has a dedication to his career and the joy he finds in both aspects of life.
Personal Life and Interests
As a dad to a 15 year old son, he enjoys watching him grow and occasionally visit Hillcrest High School. Mr. Pulgar does not have any pets and believes that animals should not be kept in homes. However, he has other passions that bring him peace. Swimming and ice skating, in particular, give him energy to take on each new day. His taste in music is really unique and special. Mr. Pulgar likes to listen to only Christian music, finding spiritual connection through his faith. His love fortravel has taken him to Colombia and Venezuela (his home country) and Mr. Pulgar wants to visit Japan, Scotland, and Peru. Scotland holds a special place in his heart because of a friend from church, and Japan intrigues him because he minored in Japanese studies at Queens College. When asked about key influences in his life, Mr. Pulgar credits Christianity and his travels. His faith has taught him the importance of forgiveness, allowing him to move forward in life without holding onto negativity. Experiences in different states have also broadened his perspective, making him appreciate life’s diversity and opportunities.
His advice for young students at Hillcrest High School is to “enjoy life one day at a time, and always remember to take care of love first.”
