Mock Trials with Mr.Farber

By Nicholas Ruffin

“History is very important to understand the past to move forward with the future." -Mr.Farber

Mr. Farber is a social studies teacher who has been teaching at Hillcrest High School for 18 years. During his years as a teacher he has taught U.S. History, Civics, Law, Government, Global Studies, and Politics. Currently he's a part of the Teachers of Tomorrow SLC.

Mr. Farber is involved as the Co-Advisor of the mock trial program. This program is in connection with the justice resource center of New York City. The Mock trial program is a criminal or civil trial case which takes place in a civil court or criminal courts. The program mimics real courtroom scenarios where students can use their knowledge about the law. This program stands as a platform for students specifically who are interested in public speaking and law, which are the two attributes that are needed in this program.

Since 2020, he has been a part of the program and says the program is improving as time goes by. “The head justice resource center called me the other day and complimented us on the good work we have done over the last few years to keep this program going and to keep it going in the right direction.”

“It’s an opportunity, it’s coming forth with teaching tolerance and teaching the hard history that people have respect for."

When asked, he expressed how he was inspired to become a teacher. “As a history teacher I’m inspired by my father, personally. My father was a very big influence on me. He was a history teacher. This year, he passed away, and it inspired me even more to give more to my students, to give more respect, to give more everyday to teaching this craft."
