In October, it was announced that Bad Bunny (also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) will be this year's Super Bowl half-time show performer. This has brought major backlash as it is not only a major stepping stone for the Latino community, but the Puerto Rican one as well. Sources say Republicans like Corey Lewandowski and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have made various warnings about ICE being at the halftime show. On social media, people are calling this a MAGA ICE outrage.
Bad Bunny has openly spoken about going on tour for his new album “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” everywhere but the U.S., as he doesn’t believe in President Donald Trump's ideals and principles. He has openly expressed his distaste for ICE (US immigration and customs Enforcement) and the want to protect his fans. A good portion of his fan base, mostly being Latino’s are ecstatic for his performance saying things like “There's a football game at the Bad Bunny show?” or “Finally some Sazon (seasoning)” indicating that they will be there for Bad Bunny, not the game, increasing the NFL watch count significantly. Many young Americans are learning not only to dance to the music, but share love for Latino culture as well. It has become a trend on TikTok for young Americans to listen to different Latin American genres because of Bad Bunny.
On SNL’s (Saturday Night Live) 51 premiere returning host Bad Bunny clapped back on the backlash stating, “It’s more than a win for myself, it’s a win for all of us. Our footprints and our contribution in this country, no one will ever be able to take that away or erase it.” The NY Post stated, “The music producer teased the non-Spanish speakers, telling them they needed to study the language to enjoy the upcoming performance. If you didn’t understand what I just said. You have four months to learn,” he mockingly suggested.” This goes to say he is doing the Super Bowl, whether they like it or not, giving them the choice to either stay and learn or deal with it.
