Let's take the time each day to celebrate the culture and contributions of our Hispanic students
From September 15th to October 15th, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month(Open external link) in the United States each year. This tradition began in 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson first issued a proclamation to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Week. Later, Congress passed a bill to extend the celebration to last an entire month, which was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, and National Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated every year since 1989. The theme for 2024 is “ “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.”
The dates for Hispanic Heritage Month were chosen to coincide(Open external link) with the Independence Day celebrations of many Latin American nations — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua — that declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Chile, Mexico, and Belize also each have their own Independence Day celebrations on days throughout the month as well.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless contributions that Hispanic Americans have made to our nation, and especially to New York City, over the years. We also take this time to recognize the trailblazing individuals who fought for progress and equity for their communities. We encourage teachers, students, and families to explore the resources shared below to further expand their understanding of this rich and vibrant history.

Digital Portfolios:
Digital Portfolios from the 2023-2024 school year are to be reviewed by classroom teachers and providers to get a wholistic sense of students strengths, challenges, prerequisite needs and to identify any academic lag that may have occurred over the summer. I have attached the link to the shared portfolio drive below which is searchable by student name.
While using the results from current assessments and last years portfolio results ask yourself:
What are my students’ strengths with regard to the required knowledge and skills?
What are my students’ learning needs with regard to the required knowledge and skills?
Do students have sufficient foundational content and process skills to approach new learning?
How can I support student learning through scaffolding and differentiation?
Administration will meet with teachers to discuss your class data during IPC's and class visits.

Environmental Walkthrough:
Starting the week of September 16th, coaches will begin classroom walkthroughs focused on their respective content areas and the overall readiness of classroom to support our young scholars. Their walkthroughs are supportive in nature to assist you in ensuring your room is an instructionally viable learning space. Administration will be doing walkthroughs during October and will be using the attached checklist (see link below) when we visit your classrooms. Please keep in mind the following considerations that should be in place in your classroom environment by that time:
Teachers should have a content and language objective written in "I can" statements. The teaching observed should match the posted objectives.
All classroom bulletin boards must have a title, task, standard, rubric with feedback. Some classrooms have students writing their own feedback which is powerful and great to see in the upper grades where students are more independent. The language of the feedback should come from the standards based rubric.
All classrooms should be a clutter free environment. K-2 should have clearly labeled areas with defined spaces.
Process charts should be displayed to showcase student learning in the classroom. Also, there should be charts devoted to SEL and building classroom community. K-2 can include job charts, birthday months chart, that help students to connect to one another. Pictures of students can be evident to show centers management in the classrooms.
Students learn best with visual aids and anchors. Anchor charts are a pivotal part of any instructional environment:
Anchor charts build a culture of literacy in the classroom, as teachers and students make thinking visible by recording content, strategies, processes, cues, and guidelines during the learning process.
Posting anchor charts keeps relevant and current learning accessible to students to remind them of prior learning and to enable them to make connections as new learning happens.
Students refer to the charts and use them as tools as they answer questions, expand ideas, or contribute to discussions and problem-solving in class.

Please be advised that coaches will begin informal environmental walkthroughs this week.

Special Education Weekly Tips...
Lay the foundation for positive teacher-student relationships
Data indicates that teachers influence student achievement more than any factor. Students learn best when they feel safe and supported. In both one-on-one and group settings, build a classroom culture of inclusivity, positivity, and engagement. Get to know your students as people first: what their families are like, what they’re reading, how they spend time with their friends. Don’t be afraid to share parts of yourself, too: you can talk about your pet, or what you did over summer vacation. Smiles and laughter are strong signs that you’re forging connection.
Know your students’ IEPs.
The IEP, or “individualized education program,” is critical in understanding how to best support each student. First, note any essential meeting dates and times, and put them on your calendar. Next, read each IEP carefully, noting any learning accommodations, behavioral concerns, and goals.
If you’re looking for strategies, materials, or just some guidance on how to best support our ELL students, please don’t hesitate to reach out- ENL/BIL Dept.
Looking forward to seeing you at our first ENL Department meeting on Monday 9/16 at 2:30 PM in room 311.
