TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

We are excited to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week beginning the week of May 12th to allow us to have a full five day menu of events not interrupted by testing and trips. The menu has been shared with you, please register for the massages on Monday May 12th.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR

As we approach the end of the school year and we begin to consider our students’ placement for next year, it is important to be mindful of the promotional criteria for our students in grades K – 5, our SPED’s and our ELLs. Please note the measures of school performance that teachers may use to determine student progress against NYSED standards. Also please reference the “Recommendation for Retention” memo that will be sent under separate cover that indicates the evidence we require for students being recommended for retention. Students in Grades 3 -5 being recommended for retention must be tested using the promotional portfolio assessment that will be shared with you by your grade liaison. If you have any questions about the below, please see an administrator.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR STUDENT PROMOTION:

JUNE PROMOTION PROCESS - Updated May 2025

In May and June, teachers use multiple measures of performance to determine if students are ready for the next grade level. Schools assess students on their progress towards these benchmarks using different promotion criteria. Promotion criteria are based on grade level, a student’s IEP, and/or English language learner (ELL) status. The decision-making process for each promotion criteria is described below and in Appendices A and B.

• LGR: Students in kindergarten–grade 2

• STD: Students in grades 3–8 held to standard promotion criteria

• MOD: Students with IEPs in grades 3‒8 held to modified promotion criteria

• MLT, ML8, MT8: English language learners in grades 3‒8, based on number of years in a United States school system (USSS) and status as a student with interrupted formal education (SIFE)

• STD: Students in grades 9–12 • EXM and NON: Students who are not held to promotion standards

• Overage and previously retained

Students in Kindergarten–Grade 2 (LGR)

Schools review each student’s performance over the course of the school year to determine if the student is making progress toward meeting the grade-level learning standards in literacy and math. Schools must notify a student’s family in the Spring if promotion is considered not to be in the child’s best interest and actively involve the family in reaching a decision to retain the student. For students with an IEP, the decision shall consider the student’s grade-level progress, mastery of IEP goals, and current supports and services. For ELL students, the decision shall consider the student’s language development however limited English proficiency alone may not be the sole basis for retaining a student.

Students in Grades 3‒8

Held to Standard Promotion Criteria (STD) Most students in grades 3–8, including a majority of students with IEPs and ELLs, are held to standard promotion criteria. Students held to standard promotion criteria work toward the same grade-level promotion benchmarks in ELA and math (as defined by the school) and go through the following process. Teachers determine if students are ready for the next grade level after reviewing multiple measures of performance from throughout the school year. While promotion benchmarks must be the same across a grade, teachers may use different measures of progress for their class or on a student-by-student basis. It is important for teachers to know their students well and use multiple measures that accurately assess each student’s progress. Schools that need more evidence to determine the student’s readiness for the next grade level should compile a collection of student work and administer a promotion portfolio in ELA and/or math.

Students with IEPs, students with Section 504 Plans, ELLs and former ELLs must be provided with the testing accommodations, supports, and services they are entitled to when completing the promotion portfolios, unless the testing accommodations alter the construct of the test. Principals make promotion recommendations based on the ELA and math skills demonstrated in each student’s portfolio. If a student meets the grade-level promotion benchmarks or if a student’s promotion portfolio demonstrates they have met promotion benchmarks, then they are promoted to the next grade level. If a student’s promotion portfolio demonstrates they have not yet attained promotion benchmarks, then they are not promoted in June and are mandated to attend summer school.

STUDENT PROMOTOIN

Enter the child’s place of birth. You may enter the city, if the child was born in New York State, or you may enter the city and state if the child was born outside of New York State but still in the USA. If the student was born outside of the USA, please enter his/her country of birth.
Enter which option was submitted as proof of age for the child. The only acceptable proof of age would be an original birth certificate (with the raised seal), an original baptismal certificate, or an original passport.
Enter the nine (9) digit student ID (OSIS) number. This is an essential requirement on each Cumulative Record Card, and is often required more than one time per form. The Division of Early Childhood provides you with this information and it can be found in PreKIDS (miscellaneous, student roster).

Please note that beginning next Tuesday, May 13th grades will begin the task of completing the new class assignment sheets for 2025-2026 with Grade Liaisons during other professional work time, deadline is Tuesday, June 3rd (from 2:20 to 3:00 pm). We are asking that each grade collaborate to complete the new grade class list for your students with their new grade/class for September 2025.

Considerations for this task are as follows:

1) Please do not track this year’s ICT general education students into an ICT class for next year. General education students should be rotated through ICT classrooms.

2) Please try to keep all SETTS students in one classroom on each grade to facilitate the SETTS teacher pushing-in to support students in their classroom setting.

3) Take into consideration dynamics of students in current classroom and conflict history. Also consider student/teacher coupling – best fit if possible.

4) Please ensure new class sheets are done no later than COB on Monday, June 2nd.

5) Teachers should use preps to grade student work and begin entering grades on report cards.

6) Complete the Class List (attached) for each class of the promotional grade and email the completed list to Suzy and Ms. Johnson.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of the culture and history of Asian-Pacific Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month originated as a congressional bill in 1978 and in 1992 it was expanded from a week to a month-long celebration. To help you get familiar with the types of speaking questions students will encounter, here are the links to the 2025 NYSESLAT Samplers:

How You Can Support Your Students:

Encourage students to speak in complete sentences when answering questions.
Remind students to stay on topic and expand their responses using linking words like because, so, then, and.
Practice answering with details, not just one-word or yes/no answers.
Give students wait time after asking a question so they can process and form a response.
Reassure students that mistakes are okay — the focus is on trying their best to communicate their ideas.
