Independent reading - schedule time for a class visit during open access time
Research instruction - teach students how to use databases, journals, books, etc.
Information literacy - teach students website/resource evaluation and citation methods
Project based learning - collaborate on project design and implementation
Resource recommendations - provide book and website recommendations

Words & Verbs Curriculum

In collaboration with theMSQI Initiative and Urban Word NYC we present the Words & Verbs Middle School Poetry Slam Initiative, which engages dynamic spoken word poetry and hip-hop curricula with performance opportunities and teaching artist visits from professional poets. The Poetry Slam Assembly is April 20th for 7th and 8th Graders. Check out the Curriculum for 7th and 8th Graders here.

Spoken Word Videos

Students need to know that poetry lives off the page. Here's a sampling of talented youths and adults performing their poems. I suggest you watch all videos BEFORE showing it to your class. If there is questionable language, I marked it with "language" in the video's title.
