CLARENCE G. ELLIS, Ed.D.

Dr. Clarence G. Ellis is committed to a life of service. Clarence is the son of immigrant parents who stressed that education is the key that unlocks the doors of opportunity. His parents also believed, “if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready!” Dr. Ellis’ covenant of being an equity advocate has led to a 37-year career grounded in the philosophy of “children first.”

Recognized for being a visionary leader and strategic thinker with more than 37 years of public education experience, Dr. Ellis has demonstrated his ability to manage and advocate change processes in classroom settings, and is a highly motivated, results-oriented professional with an approachable style and a strong work ethic marked by dedication, initiative and integrity.

About Clarence


Born in Bedford Stuyvesant and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Ellis graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School.  He is a proud product of the New York City Public Schools.


Dr. Ellis assumed the position of Superintendent of Schools for the East Ramapo Central School District on July 1st, 2021 after serving seven years as Superintendent of District 17 in New York City's Department of Education.

Dr. Ellis takes great pride in working effectively to ensure community and programmatic success.  He utilizes his skills to promote the overall effectiveness of the schools and programs that he supports and advises. He enjoys working in the capacity of improving instructional delivery and enhancing school climate to foster student success, and look forward to serving with an administration that encourages a supportive and collegial work environment.
