(Cohort 2) Multilingual Learner Working Group: Developing our collective understandings and exploring meaningful resources for teachers of multilingual learners
Have you ever been asked to present best practices, lead grade or content meetings, or deliver in-house professional learning around ENL pedagogy? This series aims to better prepare ENL teachers, and co-teaching pairs, for being the experts in their school. This working group will come together to build our collective understanding around what works for multilingual learners (MLs) and explore practices, resources and tools that support teachers in planning for the content, linguistic and skill demands of MLs in secondary schools. During these 3 full-day sessions, in-person, we will collectively develop our ENL expertise with the expectation to practice with these resources in your school community to build a more comprehensive understanding of how to better support the needs of your MLs.

Scaffolding Content for Developing ELLs, Grades 3-12
Developing English language learners (ELLs) are students who have received English as a new language (ENL) services for 4 to 6 years in New York. In NYC Public Schools, 44% of Developing ELLs were born in the United States and nearly 80% are at the advanced Transitioning and Expanding English proficiency levels. As a result, Developing ELLs often “blend in” with their non-ELL peers and may miss out on the key supports that they need in their content area classes. This series will address those critical supports by focusing exclusively on the unique needs of Developing ELLs.
In this virtual series, we will:
Identify how understanding the assets of Developing ELLs can help to strengthen core instruction that meets their needs
Examine cross-cutting and content-specific practices to strengthen academic language skills in content area texts and tasks
Consider school-wide practices to advance English language and home language development in order to reduce the likelihood of Developing ELLs becoming Long-term ELLs
Ideal participants are common branch and content area teachers in grades 3-12, but this series is open to all interested and committed educators.
