In year one of the 2018-21 NYSED Learning Technology Grant, teachers and parents introduced NYCDOE’s FaceLab curriculum to schools in NYCDOE Community School District 5 through the Gears of Fury introductory robotics curriculum. This FaceLab initiative brought LEGO EV3 robotics basics into classrooms and also introduced systems thinking, mechanical engineering, and programming to students.
In year two teachers and parents worked together to author the City of Fury curriculum, designed as a successor to Gears of Fury. This new curriculum challenges students to take what they learned further and use new skills to solve urban issues. The curriculum uses current events and relatable concerns to prepare learners to tackle problems the world has yet to define.
In year three schools were impacted by the COVID 19 pandemic . Teachers attended virtual professional development sessions and worked with small groups of students to implement a modified version of the Gears of Fury curriculum.

Welcome to a new adventure! You will be learning and leading students through a ten-session curriculum called Gears of Fury. In this adventure, you will use systems thinking to teach and learn about robotics and engineering. By the time you finish, you will have made a robot, learned to program or code it, and you will use your robot to compete against another robot. Hopefully, you will also have fun and see how the curriculum relates to the world around us.
Are you prepared to go further? With City of Fury, you will build on the foundation established by Gears of Fury by applying your newfound skills as an engineer to realistic scenarios in urban environments. By the end of the curriculum, you will learn how robotics and engineering play a vital role in the conservation and proliferation of many ecosystems.
