If my child has an IEP in Grade 8, will they have an IEP in high school?
An excellent question that is very student specific. A resource teacher would be happy to discuss your child’s learning needs with you to determine if a IEP will be necessary in high school.
What does an IEP program look like in high school?
An IEP will offer varying degrees of support to a student, depending on the diagnosis and identified areas of strengths and learning needs. This can be discussed in more detail with a resource teacher.
My child has an IEP for giftedness. What will that look like in high school?
An IEP for giftedness supports program plans for enrichment opportunities in a student’s area of strengths and interests. The IPRC is a regular classroom placement and involves collaboration with the classroom teacher, resource teacher and student.
How do I register my child for the Life Skills or Learning Centre programs?
For Secondary Learning Centre or Life Skills program placements, parents should first inquire with their current elementary school. Elementary school teams will contact the high school SERT and program suitability will be determined in consultation with SCDSB school staff, elementary and secondary school teams, and family and an IPRC meeting will follow.
Will my child’s SEA device follow them to high school?
Yes it will. If your student is from one of our SCDSB feeder schools, it will come over automatically. If you are a student coming from outside of SCDSB, then please indicate on the registration form that your student has SEA equipment, as the school will need to request their device.
Where will my child go to get their SEA device when they arrive at high school?
The SEA devices are stored in the Resource Room (Room 129) at the school. They are able to sign it in and out daily for their use at school, or the parents can sign a waiver allowing the student to take it home with them.
How does my child access extra support while at high school?
For students in Regular Class placements, they will ask their classroom teacher to go to the Resource room for extra support. The teacher will call the Resource room and make sure that a Special Education Resource teacher is aware the student is coming down for support. The Special Education Resource Teacher will work with the student directly, or in consultation while they are in the Resource Room.
