Frequently Asked Questions

What will students learn in the Jr Bears Leadership Course?

This course prepares students to act in leadership roles. Working with community partners, they will design and implement a plan for contributing to their school and/or community; develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, teamwork, and conflict management; and apply those skills in leadership roles. Students will examine group dynamics and learn the value of diversity within groups and communities.

Through successful completion of the Jr Bears Leadership Course students will achieve a high school credit which can be used to satisfy requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

What is the cost for the Jr Bears Leadership Course?

Nothing! The course is offered entirely free of charge by the Simcoe County District School Board. The course will be taught by fully qualified teachers (and probably some GBDSS familiar faces).

What are the dates, times and locations for the Jr Bears Leadership Course?

The course will be held at Georgian Bay District Secondary School on most Thursday nights from October 2024 to June 2025. Classes will not run over Board holidays (i.e. Family Day, March Break, Easter, Victoria Day). The full course dates are available here.

This is a lot of time. Does my student need to attend all the nights?

Yes. The Ministry of Education requires a minimum of 110 hours of instruction for all Ontario Secondary School credit bearing courses.

Can my student attend if they are not necessarily going to attend GBDSS?

Yes. This is an opportunity for all Grade 8 students in our community.

The course runs over the dinner hour. Will my student have a chance to eat?

Yes. Eating time will be built into each course evening. Students will also have access to a fridge and a microwave.

Where can I get more information?

We will be hosting a Virtual Information Night on Wednesday, June 12 at 6pm. Register for that event here.
