GBD students interview local veterans
In our history courses, we connect with our local communities in several ways. Students have an opportunity to participate in interactive learning through the WWI in the Trenches field trip to the Simcoe County Museum, assist with a Veteran’s luncheon hosted by the Midland Legion, and create “Peek at the Past” interviews and oral history documentaries.
Some of the other ways our history classes connect with our communities include:
Cell phone seminars to seniors.
Local Veteran’s research projects.
“Baby Boom" interviews with Askennonia Centre
In the 2019-2020 school year, Civics classes at GBDSS participated in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). In teams, students learn about social issues impacting their community, choose a charity that addresses one issue to research and visit, and then share what they learned with their peers through a classroom presentation. The team with the most compelling presentation receives $5000 grant directly to their charity from YPI. The 2019-2020 grant was given to five charities and was for $100 each. Recipients included Wendat Community Psychiatric Support Programs, Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation, Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre, Huronia Transition Homes - Rosewood Shelter, and Jack.org.
GBDSS Students participating in Model UN
Canadian and World Studies at GBDSS also puts a team into the Model United Nations Simulation, which takes place every spring at the SCDSB office in Midhurst. Teams of ten students represent nations of the world and debate pressing issues that the UN deals with today. Students gain experience in public speaking and have an opportunity to think critically about issues relating topics such as climate change, human rights, and dealing with current and future health crises.
Our Law courses provide students an opportunity to participate in a Mock Legal Trial, where GBDSS enters a team to compete against other schools in our County. Students take various roles in a modern courtroom and participate in a criminal trial. This extra-curricular opportunity allows students the chance to practice their public speaking and allows them to explore careers associated with Canadian law, while also learning more about how our trial system works.
