Meaningful learning can only happen when teachers and students work together. To help students work together and learn more effectively, common expectations must be established. Team Justice League implements class expectations rooted in the Whole Brain Teaching philosophy across content areas in both virtual and face-to-face learning.
Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) emphasizes and supports continual student growth and improvement by supporting and developing high-level thinking skills, emotional intelligence and awareness, and engagement in the academic curriculum. The key to doing this? Maintaining a safe, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment, whether physical or virtual, by meeting the following expectations:
Class time is precious--get the most out of it by listening to and following the teacher's directions quickly and efficiently!
Discussion and collaboration are a super essential part of learning at STEM, and raising your hand instead of calling out, virtually or physically, means that everyone has a chance to speak and be heard, and that discussions and debates stay respectful and productive.
Our classrooms might look a bit different these days, but showing respect by asking for permission to leave your seat (or Zoom session) is still important.
What are smart choices? They're choices that move you towards your goals, keep you safe, and make you a better person. Most of the time, it's plain old common sense.
Turn your assignments in on time. Make sure you're getting enough sleep. Speak kindly to others. Future You will thank you, we promise.
You are part of a bigger learning community here at STEM. Support your peers, teachers, and other members of our STEM community with your words and actions--think before you act: is what I'm about to say or do going to contribute positively to class? To our community?
What's your goal? Why is it important? How are you going to accomplish it? Keep your eye on the prize and act accordingly!
Distance learning presents unique and new challenges for students and teachers alike, but it also presents opportunity--for innovative curriculum, student expression, and meaningful connection and engagement between students and teachers absent the "background noise" and hustle-bustle of being in the school building. In order to foster a productive and safe virtual instructional environment, students will adhere to the following expectations:
