CAREER DISCOVERY IN SKILLED TRADES*-9, 10, 11, 12

Grades 9,10,11,12

Course Length: 1 semester, 2 periods

Prerequisite: noneUsing the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum with additional components related to math and English high school standards, this course guides students through over 15 different branches of skilled trades in the building industry with an overall emphasis on safety. Units include the following: Tools and Materials, Construction Health and Safety, Blueprint Reading, Basic Math for Construction, Heritage of the American Worker, and Green Construction. Guest speakers from many branches of skilled trades are invited in to share their own experiences and what their day to day work looks like including a look at their special tools and equipment.  Planned trips are planned to explore job sites and training centers with hands-on supervised use of specialty tools in tasks as well as a look at facilities. This course is meant to give students an inside perspective of potential careers that have high earning potential and call for a vast range of interests, knowledge, and aptitudes in order to begin to fill the need that is in our local and regional area for skilled trades.

PREREQUISITE: Selection is through an application and interview process as well as site procurement prior to the semester start date.

Content Description: School-to-Career is an academic opportunity for the student to explore possible career pathways in a real job environment.  Students must keep excellent school and work-site attendance/behavior and keep up in all other courses. Students will be scheduled for worksite attendance for 1-2 periods during the school day with additional periods at the discretion of the principal, school counselor, and School-to-Career coordinator. Sites are chosen and arranged by the student prior to the start of the semester with final approval by the School-to-Career coordinator, and students will provide their own transportation. Each student completes weekly assignments via Google Classroom, a quarterly project, and a semester evaluation.  Weekly assignments center around career reflections, research in the industry, and career readiness tasks such as preparing a resume and budgeting. 

Objectives: School-to-Career 1.)  To introduce students to career exploration, employable skills, communication and general aspects of the world of work. 2.) To correlate interests and abilities with possible career choices. 3.) To understand the responsibility of employment.
