The Spirit of Ancestors tells the powerful story of Moai Hoa Haka Nana’ia, one of Rapa Nui’s (Easter Island) sacred spirits, known on the island as the Stolen Friend. Taken by colonizers over a century ago, this massive, iconic carving now sits in a museum, one of countless living objects displaced from their homelands.
For the Rapa Nui, the Moai is imbued with Mana—the life force essential to their well-being. His absence from the island, where he once stood watch alongside his kin, threatens the delicate bond between spirit and people. Over time, this fracture endangers not only their cultural heritage but also the connection of younger generations to their ancestors.
This documentary follows three generations of the Pakarati family as they travel to Europe to try to reclaim the Stolen Friend, bring his spirit home and ensure a strong future for those to come.

The daily rituals of two mining communities are observed in this strikingly visual and unsparing portrait of life and work in Bolivia’s altiplano, at an altitude of fourteen thousand feet. More than ten thousand miners still excavate the slopes and tunnels of the richest silver field in mining history, Cerro Rico (Rich Hill), an enormous conical mountain in the Andes that towers over the city of Potosí. The miners’ lives offer a strong denunciation of the hardships and alienation inherent in industrial work inside the mines, underscoring the historical impact on the native population created by global demands for earth’s wealth. Shot in iconic Potosí and Cerro Rico and, as a counterpart, in the Arctic-looking plains of Salar de Uyuni, where salt is extracted daily and where half of the world’s lithium reserves remain untapped.

With Rosario Quispe, Warmis
How can one create a future when there is none? That’s the question Nobel Peace Prize nominee Rosario Quispe, a Kolla woman, asked herself in 1994 when the mines were closing, and the people of Northern Argentina were left without work, forcing them to migrate to the south. This impactful documentary pays tribute to Rosario, who, through a micro-credit system that was later recognized by Harvard University, established an enterprise in Abra Pampa that supports thousands of families from the aboriginal communities of the region.
Together, in alliance with national entrepreneurs, they market 95% of the llama wool fiber produced in Puna, Argentina, to Europe and Latin America. Today, Warmi Sayasungo supports more than 6,000 families from 80 native communities.

Spanish and Guaraní with English Subtitles
With Juan Carlos Valdivia, Elio Ortíz, Felipe Romá
A Bolivian filmmaker and a Guaraní Indian travel together through the forests of southeastern Bolivia to make a film about the Guaraní people. The starting point is a 1911 film by Swedish explorer Erland Nordenskiöld. But today’s reality turns out to be much more intense than the nostalgia for a lost world. In Yvy Maraey, the white man (the director) and the Indian create and interpret their own characters, walking the thin line between documentary, fiction, and performance. Far from observing another culture, we are watched and questioned about our identity in a country undergoing enormous social, political, and historical change as it struggles to create an intercultural society. Yvy Maraey is a quest for the knowledge within, seen through the eyes of the other. Here learning comes from another form of seeing—listening. The film combines reality with the epic tale of a heroic indigenous nation.
