Art Challenge

Hello Rough Riders,

I am eager to get content out to you and your family to help you play, explore, and create! I cannot wait to see what you all create. This is our art challenge page. This page will be updated regularly. If you do not like a challenge, just wait for the next on to come out. Make sure to take pictures and share them with me.

8th challenge

This week's challenge is to gather a paint brush, paper, and some cold coffee (or watercolor if you aren’t a coffee drinker!) and experiment with creating a landscape using a wide variety of VALUES (the lightness or darkness of a color) and a wide variety of BRUSHSTROKES. ⠀Chinese brush painting artists from the Chinese Ming dynasty used only black ink and water as a way to focus on artistic expression in other ways. They used a variety of different types of expressive brushstrokes in a range of values (lights and darks). You’ll notice the people are very small in comparison with the surroundings which connects with their Buddhist beliefs that humans are a small part of nature.⠀Challenge adapted from: @artclasscurator.

7th challenge

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is a one line art challenge. Your challenge is to create a drawing with only one line. This week I included a video demonstrating this challenge.

Today’s challenge is inspired by all the artist around the world sharing their time, expertise, and ideas with everyone on the web. So lets get our art tools out and let you imagination run wild. :)

6th challenge

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is scribble art. Your challenge is to have someone in your household make a scribble on a piece of paper. After that, you are in charge. YOU'RE THE ARTIST! Study the scribble and draw what you imagination creates.

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is an up-cycle animal. We are now on week five of our remote learning experience. Your challenge is to create an animal using recyclable items from around the house. Cut it, stack it, tear it, and glue it. You make the choice, YOU'RE THE ARTIST! Make sure to take a photo and then upload it to Google Classroom

4th challenge

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is a found object word. After being cooped up in my house for the last “feels like forever,” I’m ready to play with objects around the house. Your challenge is to create a word that describes something you're thankful for. Organize it, stack it, scatter it, tear it. You make the choice, YOU'RE THE ARTIST! Make sure to take a photo and then upload it to Google Classroom

3rd challenge

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is to head outside for the #youneedart challenge. After being cooped up in my house for the last “feels like forever,” I’m ready to play in some dirt. Your challenge is to go outside and create an artwork out of any earth materials you can find. Organize it, stack it, scatter it, tear it. Take a photo and then leave it for someone else to find or for the wind to blow it away.
Today’s challenge is inspired by the art of Andy Goldsworthy, who goes outside and create beautiful ephemeral compositions from fleeting materials and moments out of leaves, stones, ice, feathers, water, twigs, etc.

2nd challenge

This week’s YOU NEED ART task is to look through the image slide, under this challenge, until you find an artwork that immediately makes you FEEL something--happy, sad, mad, disgusted, shocked, ANYTHING. Write down WHAT it made you feel and WHY.
I did this challenge and my first feeling came from Last Piece by Philip Guston. I immediately had an anxious and confused feeling. It makes me think of a butcher shop or a scary movie. Does that mean this is bad art because it made me feel bad? No! Art that makes me feel something, even if it's unpleasant, is art worth experiencing.

1st challenge

Today is the first day of our brand new YOU NEED ART challenge! I'll be posting a new challenge task inspired by works of art from across time and cultures to help you step out of your day-to-day and do something a little bit different!
Today’s challenge is to go outside to the same spot at three different times and take a photo of the same spot to see how the different lighting impacts the colors and textures you see.
Today's task is inspired by Monet and the other Impressionists who spend time painting en plein air (aka outside) at different times of day and in different weather conditions to explore light and color.
