An academic journal (also called a scholarly journal or a peer reviewed journal) is written by an expert in an academic or professional field (very often a university professor). The purpose of an academic journal article is to report on original research or experimentation. Readers of academic journal articles are typically others in the scholarly world (professors, students, etc.). Though a few academic journals are freely available online, the majority can only be accessed through a school library's databases.
