I am always happy to meet with parents or speak to you on the phone. Please e-mail me or call the office to schedule an in-person conference or phone call.

Homework is a part of your child's grade. It is meant to reinforce concepts taught in the classroom.

    • Spelling homework will be sent home on Fridays for the following week. Word lists are provided at the bottom of a tic tac toe menu. Students choose three activities to be completed by the following Thursday.
    • A fluency story on your child's reading level should be practiced nightly. Fluency stories will be added to homework package after all students are individually assessed.
    • Multiplication practice tests will be sent for homework on Fridays and will be due on Thursdays beginning in November.
    • Math homework will be sent home Monday through Friday (unless math class was missed due to an assembly).

Tests and quizzes:

  • Spelling will be evaluated in daily writing. In addition, there will be a spelling assessment at the end of each unit of reading. Units are usually six weeks in duration. A list of 20 previously studied words will be sent home the week prior to the assessment.
  • Multiplication timed quizzes will be given every Thursday beginning sometime in November. These are 1 minute quizzes with 20 problems.
  • There will be 12 Math chapter tests. The duration of a chapter is between 10 and 17 days plus a review day. The Math tests will be announced in the homework package. There is a practice test in the last pages of every math book.

Extra Reading and Math Practice:

  • We will use an online reading program called Learning A to Z/Razz Kids at https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login/. We read these leveled readers in class during the school day. You will receive a letter with your child's individual username and password. Students are welcome to use this program at home for extra reading practice on their reading level. It is not a requirement.
  • Online math program username and passwords for Think Central will be sent home. Students will receive extra practice on the math topic we are studying during the school day. Students are welcome to practice at home as well. This is not a requirement.

Extra Help:

I am also available for extra help on Thursday morning from 7:50 am until 8:20.

If you would like to send your child to extra help, either e-mail me or write me a note the day or two before and have your child meet me inside the front doors of school at 7:50.

Fluency Homework

Fluency is the ability to read automatically, accurately, quickly, smoothly, and with expression. Without automaticity, reading skills falter and comprehension suffers.

Phrasing and expression are two important strategies used to increase fluency. We “chunk” two to four words (or more) in order to read fluently with expression.

For example, the sentence “Joe helped the dog find her toy” can be chunked into “Joe helped” and “the dog” and “find her toy”. Focusing on phrasing reinforces accuracy, speed, and expression.

The best approach to improve fluency is to read and reread text over and over until it is mastered. To that end, I will be sending home a folder with poems, leveled stories, and other reading material.

Please have your child return the fluency folder every day with the reading material until a new text is introduced.

Practice reading the fluency homework with expression each day will help your child develop fluency.

With reinforcement reading poems and other selected materials at home, your child will soon be proudly reading fluently and expressively.

Language Arts Literacy

Fluency is one component of the Language Arts Literacy program

Another feature includes an Orton-Gillingham Method of learning phonemic awareness. We will practice the spelling of every phoneme. We will blend phonemes into syllables in order to ensure that students are reading with automaticity rather than relying only on recalling learned sight words.

To further develop phonemic awareness in class, we will “mark words”, skywrite, and complete other activities to reinforce the sounds and spelling of words.

After assessing your child’s reading abilities, we read stories at your child’s instructional level to further develop the necessary skills to become a fluent reader.

We will use graphic organizers, activities, and other materials to increase vocabulary, word recognition, and comprehension skills.

Writing will be integrated into our Language Arts Literacy Program. Writing complex, vivid sentences and multi-paragraph essays will become increasingly more complex as the year progresses.

Third grade utilizes the Empowering Writers program and the Reading Street Reading Program.

Two novels we will be reading are Charlotte's Web and Because of Winn Dixie.

Math

We will be working on multiplication, division, fractions, area and perimeter, geometry, measuring, adding and subtracting with regrouping, and place value.

We will review these topics throughout the year with games, worksheets and activities to reinforce and extend learning.

Consistent review and exposure will help your child master these skills.

In addition to mastering the topics on the list, my goal is for your child to be able to multiply and divide fluently.

In addition to reviewing and previewing math concepts with activities and games, we will also work on skills from the topic and chapter your child is studying in math class.

Projects:

There will be a project in the spring called the Wax Museum. Students will create a biographical research report of a famous historical figure. A day will be established for students to dress and portray their chosen character and present information to guests.
