The Santa Barbara International Film Festival's Outstanding Performer of the Year Award honors an actor for an exceptional performance with nuance, depth, and transformation that elevates the storytelling. This year's honoree was actor MICHAEL B. JORDAN for his dual roles in "SINNERS".
TENZIN and XIMENA worked the red carpet for interviews, hoping to get a moment with the honoree.
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with ALANNA SCHMELTER, LILY QI, and ALLISON WALSH, the producers, editor and director of "ALL OF THE ABOVE".
When asked what they learned from making the film they responded that “filmmaking is a journey, and filmmaking is a collaborative effort. And without the team that we're working with, we won't be able to make this film. And also, documentary, you know, it's a lot of navigating through what the story is about. Each journey is a little different. You can't really expect a specific outcome. So with the team effort, we're able to push this through. And also, I think the message was brilliant about having difficult dialogues, and to talk to people from different perspectives. And I feel like that's the kind of conversation that's needed in our country right now.”
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with JOHN CAMARDELLA, an educator in the film "ALL OF THE ABOVE".
Tenzin and Ximena had a wonderfully long interview with John. When the reporters asked, “If you could give us a homework assignment, what would it be?” John responded: The first homework assignment I give my students is called a 'Worldview Autobiography', and what I do is I give them ten questions, and their job is to go home and think about some questions like... How have you been raised? What do you think about the world? What do you think about spirituality and divinity? Do you have a religious tradition?... And then we get into really interesting ones. How do you experience the world in your body?... the next day they come in and we go around. And they share what they're comfortable sharing. And everyone then recognizes that even though they might belong to the same religion, or the same ethnicity, or the same cultural background, their minds are blown.”
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with SARAH MOSHMAN, director of the documentary short, "SHE CHOSE WAR".
When asked what inspired her to direct this film, she recounted the humbling journey of editing in “the beautiful Ukrainian language” which she does not speak. She further stressed the importance of “getting out your own way as a filmmaker” as she realized her footage was a short instead of a feature.
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with ORLA DOYLE, PETER SKINNER, & JULIA GARDELL producers and writer/ director of
"TWO UGLY PEOPLE".
When asked how they found the story, they responded “The film's about what it means to be a stranger, and what it means to be in love with the stranger. And I feel like everyone, at some point in their life, is in love with a stranger. And then that stranger becomes someone that you know very well. And then how long can you be a stranger with someone that you know so well. So I feel like the film came from the idea of... What if I took a person who's in a relationship, and they go into this fantasy of trying to be a stranger. And what does that mean, within a context of knowing someone so well.“
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with MADDY HUNTER , JOSIE HUNTER, WARREN MENDY, and OLLY GINELLI producers, actors, and the writer/director of
"THE LONG SPRING".
When asked what conversations they hope come out of the film they responded “I guess conversations about what happens to people. The lives of individuals when they're immigrating to new countries. And what happens when they arrive, I suppose, at the destination. Because it's not always... And the troubles of the journey as well. The details that aren't usually shown in films and TV. So, creating a difficult story, but making it more publicly known.”
On February 12, at the red carpet for the OUTSTANDING PERFORMER OF THE YEAR AWARD, reporters TENZIN and XIMENA got to speak with BRISHKAY AHMED, who was the director of the film "IN THE ROOM", along with MOJLA JAMALZADEH, NALOFER, PAZIROFISK, and SAHAR PANIAN, who were all talents in the film.
When asked what they wanted people, “especially kids our age” to take away from the film they responded with “I would like you guys to please never stop fighting for your rights… I want you to demand your rights”.
