Rotting Apples Experiment

Introduction & Video

When you take a bite out of an apple and leave it on the table, it turns brown until the time you come back to it. Do you wonder why the apple turns brown? I want to know how to slow the browning process of sliced apples. I love to eat apples and eat them almost every day.

One day, I was eating an apple and when I put it down for a few minutes it started to turn brown and rot. Later on, I was wondering how and why apples turn brown. I want to know how and why about that it was a curiosity that had never been explained for me. It was something others might wonder about it as well.

When I was a kid, I wouldn’t eat the apple when it turned brown because I thought it would make me sick. I figured the skin of the apple protected the inside of the fruit and kept it from rotting. It kept the inside moist and if you removed the ‘skin’, it would make the frit make it shrivel up. I also wonder what effect the type of citrus fruit covers apple slices have on their browning? I believe that all citrus fruits contain citric acid, any kind of citrus fruit used to cover apple slices should prevent the slices from browning.
