Fresh Or Mess

Which food will last the longest?

The purpose of my project is to see which food will last the longest under temperature and heat exposure.

Introduction

I have always been told to stay away from G.M.O´s. Until a couple of days ago I never figured out why they were dangerous. G.M.O stands for genetically modified organisms. G.M.O´s throughout the past century have been looked upon as something that proves or changes the composition of a food´s DNA. I decided to do my project on G.M.O.'s because I wanted to figure out how genetically modified food is different from organic. I have always eaten organic foods from my mom and my dad. I used to wonder why I couldn't eat normal foods, but now I´ve figured out that most of the foods on the market are actually filled with G.M.O. substances. Foods like produce, milk, sodas and some types of cereals can be filled with G.M.O. products. Corn and sugar beets are the most common food filled items with G.M.O.

In my project, I am comparing two types of foods, organic and G.M.O. I will be testing which foods will last the longest and try to figure out how it lasted longer. I will be testing different foods to see if their outcome comes out differently from the first test. I will do the test and record it on paper. I believe the G.M.O. food items will last longer because there is an extra DNA strand that doesn't belong. This G.M.O. strand will prove or disprove my theory.

Procedures

Gather the supplies listed in the materials list.

Place your different kinds of fruits on the table.

Label each fruit as natural and organic

Then place your other fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator

Place the foods into different food groups.

Record how long it will take each group of foods to rot

Take pictures of each transition between the rotten foods

Record the different changes in the foods

Information

.

There are two major types of food groups most Americans eat today. Those groups are organic and natural (g.m.o). These food groups are commonly used and they are always available in stores. ¨G.M.O stands for genetically modified organisms¨ ( gmo-awareness.com). Most people do not know they are not eating G.M.O food types because it is not labeled in stores. G.M.O foods are not necessarily bad, but they are not good. G.M.O food types are made with strong chemicals that enhance the foods taste, smell, size and shape. This process has been tested on many people but no one still knows if they will affect people. With the enhancement of our foods, we do not actually know what we are eating. ¨Barely more than a third of the public believes that genetically modified foods are safe to eat¨(Poll: Skepticism of Genetically Modified Foods). ¨While 52 percent believe such foods are unsafe, an additional 13 percent are unsure about them¨ (Poll: Skepticism of Genetically Modified Foods). Other countries like the U.K will not accept G.M.O foods. They are most likely alarmed with how they made to make foods change. In my project I will be using natural as my GMO food type. Natural is hard to describe.

It is difficult to define a food product that is 'natural' because the food has probably been processed and is no longer the product of the earth¨ (Fda Administrator). While a standard definition does not exist, FDA policy does say that the term natural should apply to foods that do not contain added color, or artificial flavors. These substances may have some benefits; however, it doesn’t mean that foods labeled as natural are always low in calories, fat, and carbohydrates. For example, you may find a box of cookies in the store made with all natural ingredients, but that doesn’t automatically make them a healthy choice. When people are asked, “Which is the best description to read on a food label?” 25 percent of consumers answered, “100 percent natural” (Shelton group). Natural is an ever-changing label and it could be filled with g.m.o products.

Many countries do however go after another food type called Organic. Organic food is grown naturally the way nature intended it. When you buy organic foods, you don’t have to worry because organic farmers follow strict standards to grow the most natural fruits and vegetables. They don’t use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones, antibiotics, sewage sludge, irradiation, or any genetically modified organisms. ¨Organic foods are produced by farmers who use renewable resources and conserve the soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations¨.(Organic FAQ). Many people say organic food is safer, more nutritious, and taste better than non-organic food. Organic production is better for the environment and kinder to animals. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety ¨has found no difference in objective disease occurrence in the animals¨. This helps more shoppers buy organic products. ¨Even though organic food typically costs more than other foods, sales are steadily increasing¨. (WebMD Archives). All you have to do is look for the “USDA/Organic label and you can be confident that stringent guidelines have been followed to bring you that wholesome natural product (Tandis Bishop).

When you buy organic pork and other poultry you might enjoy having better access to open areas. The problem with these open areas is there is a increases of parasites, pathogens, and predators that are attracted to the food.

If a label says 100% natural by the FDA, then it is most likely all natural. Since Gmo is not labeled in stores no one know what they are truly eating. Hopefully people will realize that we should label Gmo products and reduce the use of eating them. Every food type has its flaws, but I believe the healthiest is 100% organic!
