Special Education Department Chair
Hello parents and students! I am Ms. Erika Avila and serve as one of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing teachers and the Special Education Department Chair here at San Gorgonio High School. 👩🏻🏫
I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology and Musicology from UCLA (Go Bruins! 🐻) and furthered my education by obtaining my Deaf Education teaching credential and master's degree from California Lutheran University. I have been proudly serving the San Bernardino City Unified School District since 2015, and have been a part of the vibrant community at San Gorgonio High School since 2018.
In addition to my role as an educator, I serve as a co-adviser for the Deaf Spartans Club🦻 and the SGHS MEChA Club✊🏼, where I strive to create inclusive spaces for students to engage and thrive. As a founder and instructor of the Mariachi and Ballet Folklórico Del Valle district group and the Grupo Folkórico de SGHS 🇲🇽, I am passionate about promoting cultural awareness and celebrating diversity through music and dance.
As a special education teacher, I believe that supporting students with special needs goes beyond academics; it involves fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and capable. Collaboration with parents is key in ensuring a holistic approach to a child's education. 🗝️ By working closely with parents, we can better understand the student's needs, provide consistent support, and promote a positive home-school partnership that enhances the student's overall development and success. Please feel free to contact me or any of our amazing Spartan special education teachers with any questions, concerns, or support.
