In order to prepare for the test, you may take your book home to study. Chapter 8 starts on page 121 in the textbook .

All 4th graders will take the test on April, 30 2018.


For the test you should be able to:

  • Explain the message of the scripture story on p. 122 - 123 about the laborers in the vineyard and describe the vineyard owner
  • Name the “Our Father” as the prayer we always say in every Mass.
  • Explain what St. Francis de Sales believed all people could do (p.124)
  • Name what St. Francis de Sales told us to do after we make a mistake.
  • Identify Jesus as the role model we look to understand God’s justice (p.123)
  • Name the Kingdom of God as a sign that Christ is present at Mass. (p.126)
  • Define the words:

  • Explain to someone at home why we celebrate Pentecost.

Study Notes:

  • If we make bad choices, we can pray to the Holy Spirit to forgive us.
  • The Holy Spirit gave the disciples the power to spread Jesus’ teachings to the world.
  • The Holy Spirit helps us spread Jesus’ message of love and forgiveness.
  • At Pentecost, flames appeared and rested among the disciples.


Define the words:

    • Pentecost :
      • For Jewish people, Pentecost was known as a celebration of the harvest.
      • On Pentecost, Jesus sent the gift of the Holy Spirit to his first disciples.
      • Mary was present at this special event.
      • After the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, they began to praise God.
      • This event marks the beginning of the Church. (p. 147)
    • Disciples: the life of the Holy Spirit was alive in these people, who were the first group to follow Jesus

  • Read the yellow box on page 171 and explain to someone at home why the 4th, 5th, and 6th commandments are studied together.

  • Have someone quiz you on the Chapter 11 review (p. 175-176) and Chapter 12 review ( p. 187 - 188)
  • Reread about how Rose Hawthorne became known as a Servant of God. (p. 182)


Study Notes:

  • 4th Commandment - Honor your parents.
  • 5th Commandment - Protect all lives. Respect the life and health of others.
  • 6th Commandment - Every marriage and family is sacred or holy.
  • We can make good, moral choices by following the 10 Commandments and the New Commandment (Law of Love).
  • We keep the Covenant when we follow the 10 Commandments.
  • The Dominican Sisters spend time in adoration each day (p. 182).
  • When we pray, our relationship with God is strengthened because we learn to understand and trust God’s plan for us.
  • We can use the Ten Commandments and the New Commandment to help us examine our conscience. (p.169)
