The Committee on Special Education (CSE) is a multidisciplinary team whose main purpose is to identify, evaluate, and review the status of, or determine eligibility for special education services on an individual basis. The CSE reviews all relevant information and current levels of student performance in order to make appropriate recommendations and potentially develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
If you suspect that your child is having academic difficulty due to a possible disability, the best place to begin is with your child's teacher(s), as well as with their guidance counselor if in grades 6-12. If modifications have been made and remedial strategies and/or services have been attempted and your child is still experiencing difficulty, then you should contact the building team. (School psychologist, Teacher(s), Social worker, or Guidance counselor*). After meeting with the building team, you might decide to refer your child to the CSE to be evaluated for special education services.
*Guidance counselors are only applicable for students in grades 6-12.
