Reading. Writing.

Thinking. Speaking

Mr. Deery's 7th Grade ELA Class

Seventh grade is a very important year for you. It will serve as the foundation for the rest of your high school experience. What you learn in this class will help you succeed in the coming years. We will develop many important skills that will help you in school, in your everyday lives, and in your future lives as employees and citizens.

This year we will focus on:

  • Reading Comprehension

  • Writing (organization, supporting ideas, narrative)

  • Critical Thinking

  • Vocabulary and Grammar

  • Current Events

  • Accountability and Strong Work Habits

  • New Media and Technology

Grading

Grading is done using a total points system. Each assignment has a point value. The weight of the assignment on the final grade is therefore tied to the number of points available on the assignment. Points will be deducted for late assignments. With that said, I am understanding of the circumstances we are in and am usually very flexible. Please be sure to communicate openly with me when their are issues.

Exams / Major Assignments – 50-100 pts.
Quizzes – 20-50 pts.
Classwork / Homework / Writing / Participation – 1-20

Expectations

  • You will respect yourself, your classmates, faculty and staff, and school property. Teasing, interrupting others, laughing, and any other general rudeness will not be tolerated. We must all work together to create and maintain a healthy learning community. Everyone
    deserves dignitiy.

  • You must accept the invitation to Google Classroom. I will keep this up to date with assignments, grades, and announcements. In the event that we need to pivot to remote learning, Classroom will be our central point for teaching and learning.

YouTube

I've started recording myself reading our assigned chapters, stories, and articles and posting them on YouTube. Even at age 11, 12,and 13, it is still beneficial for students to be read to. It's even more beneficial if they are reading along with the text.

Here is the link to my YouTube page.

I have some ideas in the works for additional content.
