Distinctions: Conflict and Bullying & Harassment
(power differential is essential element)
CONFLICT Bullying
Equal power between participants Unequal power between student who bullies and the target of the bullying
Issue or problem at center of conflict No apparent issue or problem between students
One incident or isolated Usually a pattern of behavior
Usually not intentional Target of behavior usually selected
Not usually a source of ongoing anxiety Target of bullying can feel anxious/fearful
Each participant is able to defend one self Target of bullying has difficult time defending self
Goal of action is not to control or manipulate Goal is to negatively affect the target
Actions are not audience dependent An audience plays a big part in bullying
Willingness to solve problem - resolve issue Student who bullies often denies there is problem
Mediation is a way to resolve issue Mediation exacerbates the issue
We take the safety and emotional well being of all of our students very seriously, and strive to provide an educational environment that is free of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Please call with questions and concerns.
