Authentic Writing Ideas

Ideas from our Curriculum Director,

Dr. Shay Cassily:

In our classrooms our students practice writing in authentic ways. While you are home, there are lots of fun opportunities to continue to make writing a playful part of your day. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Set up a writing table with a variety of pencils, markers, and papers
  • Ask children to help create a weekly family newsletter and email to relatives
  • Have children write lists for the grocery store
  • Help children create stories or books about family experiences
  • Give children a clipboard and pencil and send them on a word hunt around the house.
  • Involve children in writing a nightly message; keep the messages in a family journal
  • Take photos of a family activity and ask children to write about the pictures; mail it to a family member or friend.
  • Take an interest in meteorology and keep a weather chart where children write about the weather each day
  • Encourage children to write letters and cards to grandparents and other relatives
