COURSE OUTLINE

Band is a year long course open to all 9th, 10th,11th, and 12th grade students desiring to further their performance skills through instrumental music or participation in colorguard. Incoming students must audition for seating purposes. Playing an instrument prior to High School Band would be very helpful but is not always required (see an instructor for more information). A positive attitude is needed in order to work together as a team and create successful performances.

To earn full credit for band it is required that all students come to class prepared (with instrument) and participate fully each day, attend all scheduled rehearsals whether inside or outside regular school hours, as well as attend every scheduled performance throughout the year (normally held outside of regular school hours). Band camp, held early in August to prepare for the fall marching season is also a required event. During the academic year, percussionists in band are required to attend a weekly Percussion Ensemble rehearsal scheduled on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30- 4:30PM.

The benefits of membership in the SHS Concert and Red Raider Marching Band are many: members of the SHS Band have had the opportunity to perform at Walt Disney World (Florida), Disneyland (California), at Shea Stadium in New York City as well as for Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama. In addition, the band often participates in clinics and events sponsored by colleges and universities throughout New Hampshire and beyond. Individuals achieving a high level of performance are chosen each year to attend the All-State and All New England Band Festivals. Many members cite the strong bonds they form with their peers along with the myriad of leadership opportunities as being two of the most exciting benefits of participation in the ensemble.
