Welcome to the Mastricola Elementary School Counseling page!

As a school counselor, I support both the academic and social-emotional development of students, nurturing the growth of the whole child.

Social-emotional learning includes skills and competencies related to managing emotions, feeling and showing empathy to others, maintaining positive relationships, and making responsible decisions.

To support student growth, I work with students in small groups, large groups (classroom guidance lessons), and individually. All students can access the school counselor to help solve everyday problems.  If it seems that a child might benefit from regularly scheduled visits throughout the year, I would seek parent involvement, engaging a team approach to help students overcome obstacles to learning.

All work with students occurs within the context of a supportive and engaging school community that values meaningful and authentic learning experiences.  We are fortunate to work within the PBIS framework at Mastricola Elementary that promotes and sustains the expectations of safety, respect and responsibility for all community members. Our school culture also promotes the development of a “growth mindset,” one that enables students to experience failure as a part of the learning process.

I often get the question, “What does an elementary counselor do?”   You might hear a student talk about having lunch with some friends in my office, or having me visit their classroom for a lesson on such topics as bullying prevention, feelings, communication, conflict resolution, safety skills, or problem solving strategies.   They also may mention that they came to talk to me about a problem they were having during the school day.

Finally, home and school partnerships are essential to student success.  I look forward to partnering with all the families of Mastricola Elementary School to ensure your child’s success throughout the school year.  If you have any questions or would like to contact me as a “helper” in the school, please feel free to contact me!
