SYLLABUS CP4

CP SPANISH 4

Sra. Bean Año Escolar 2017-2018

¡Maestría!

Spanish CP 4 is a proficiency-based college preparatory course that builds upon the skills and materials learned in your previous years of studying Spanish. Although there are a few more grammar points to be introduced – specifically the subjunctive mood, this is the year that you will become masterful at using what you have learned.

Throughout the year we will be investigating through food, art, literature and more what has created the Spanish language and culture. You will try to make and taste truly Spanish food, create characters based on artists that you will study, interpret stories by creating skits or plays, learn about many cultural aspects, and more. Do you have ideas of things that you might to investigate? Share them with us!

Most importantly this year we will have ‘Charlas’ when all we do is speak Spanish. In the beginning I will suggest topics but as the year progresses you and a partner will lead the class. The only rules are ‘SPEAK SPANISH’ and ‘HAVE FUN’!

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

a. Students will be respectful and courteous to all at all times.

b. Students will be proficient at a Intermediate High/Advanced Low level of Spanish in reading, writing, listening and speaking as described by the competencies and ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

c. Students will demonstrate a willingness to use Spanish as much as possible while in class.

d. Students will show an interest in and an appreciation of the people, history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.

e. Students will be prepared with all materials as class begins.

CORE VALUES, BELIEFS AND EXPECTATIONS

You are expected to be familiar with and to follow the EHS Core Values, Beliefs and Expectations. You will find them on the school website (ehs.sau16.org) and posted in the classroom.

GRADING POLICY/ASSESSMENT:

20% Formative Work

This includes but is not limited to: some homework*, calentamiento (warm-up), in-class partner activities, quizzes, small projects, writing, reading, speaking and listening activities and lab work.

*Homework is checked and reviewed in class. Homework must be completed prior to your arrival to class. Homework done in class will receive a zero. Late homework is accepted for ½ credit if completed correctly and turned in within one week and prior to the summative assessment. Not all homework is given a point value; rather will be tracked for completion. Homework is posted on the board in class, mentioned orally and available on Google Classroom.

80% Summative Assessments

These assessments are proficiency/performance-based examinations in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. This includes but is not limited to: tests, translations, dictations, written compositions, conversations, skits, role play, narrations, listening/reading comprehension exercises, discussions, debates, interview posters, story boards, brochures, multi-media presentations in the target language.

Work Study Practices (WSPs)

During the school year, students will be evaluated on WSPs as part of various summative assessments. Students can track their performance in WSPs in Powerschool. The student’s communication, collaboration, self-direction, and creativity will be measured with a school wide rubric.

  • Communication - I can use various media to interpret, question, and express knowledge, information, ideas, feelings, and reasoning to create mutual understanding.
  • Creativity - I can use original and flexible thinking to communicate my ideas or construct a unique product or solution.
  • Collaboration - I can work in diverse groups to achieve a common goal.
  • Self-Direction - I can initiate and manage my learning, and demonstrate a “growth” mindset, through self-awareness, self-motivation, self-control, self-advocacy and adaptability as a reflective learner.
  • Critical Thinking and Problem-solving - I can identify key element(s) of the problem or issue, formulate valid conclusions based on sufficient and reliable evidence, and consider alternative solutions and different points of view
  • Literacy - I can read with understanding and identify important elements, demonstrate a clear and mature command of grammar and usage, write effectively and convincingly, listen respectfully and critically to comprehend, evaluate, and/or critique a speaker’s message , and use effective speaking skills (pace, voice, clarity).

Retakes (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY):

Students will have the opportunity to retake a summative assessment or a specific section of a summative assessment, regardless of the grade they earned on their original attempt, as long as the student made a valid original attempt. There are times when a retake is not possible (i.e. at the end of the quarter) due to grading/time constraints. Retake assessments should be scheduled within two weeks of the reporting of the initial assessment results on PowerSchool. See page 23 of the student handbook for more information.

Prior to the retake assessment, THE STUDENT needs to fulfill the following requirements (as applicable):

· Meet and/or email with the teacher to discuss the competencies/skills that need more work, attention, or correction.

· Make a plan for relearning...this may include:

o Making up all missing homework and formative assessments related to this competency.

o Correcting past formative/summative assessments as needed.

o Completing any study guides, graphic organizers, etc., provided by the teacher.

· Meet with the teacher again to review work completed and demonstrate relearning of the competencies in the assessment...this may take multiple meetings/extra help sessions.

· Schedule a time that is mutually workable for both teacher and student to retake the assessment...this may occur in a study hall/content lab, after school, or during independent time as necessary.

**The teacher may deny a retake on an assessment if the student does not meet these requirements.**

MATERIALS FOR CLASS:

  • Binder or a section of your binder with dividers and paper

You will given many handouts. Your binder should serve you as a mini reference book, with all of the materials I hand to you. These materials need to be easily accessible and should be organized by unit/chapter. Binder sections – Tarea, Vocabulario, Cultura, Otro (apuntes, gramática, información, etc.)

  • Pen or pencil ***You MUST have a pencil for work in the language lab.
  • Earbuds or headphones

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Attendance and Tardiness:

Please refer to the EHS Student Handbook. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each period. If students aren’t in the room when the bell rings, they are considered tardy. Repeated offenses will result in the following disciplinary actions.

· 2 tardies result in a 10-15 minute detention

· 3 tardies result in a trip to the assistant principal and an hour detention.

If you are absent, you are allowed the same amount of time to make up work that is currently specified in the student handbook. It is your responsibility to check with me to make arrangements for completing and submitting missed work. If you are absent on the day of an assessment (quiz, test, project due date/presentation), you are expected to take it immediately upon your return. It is also your responsibility to hand in any work that was due on the date of your absence! For this reason, it is very important to check online to see what homework has been assigned. All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom daily. If you are unable to do so, asking a classmate from the same class period is necessary.

You are expected to present a blue slip from the attendance office on the day of your return following a missed class unless due to a school event.

You are expected to notify me in advance if you are going to miss class due to a planned absence (vacation, fieldtrip, school event, etc). You are responsible for the work done in the missed class(-es) and expected to continue with the class upon your return (homework completed, ready to take quizzes, exams and other forms of assessments).

If you should happen to arrive tardy to class, it is only excused with a written pass from the instructor with whom you were meeting. Unexcused tardiness or absence is unacceptable and school policy will be followed.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices:

The use of cell phones and other electronic devices of any kind are not to be used during class time unless given permission by the teacher. Students will turn off and store all electronic devices in their bags during class. Failure to do so will result in confiscation during class, notification of parents and possible detention and involvement of the administration.

Plagiarism and Cheating

The EHS student handbook clearly states:

“Plagiarism will not be tolerated. It is intellectual thievery. Students who plagiarize jeopardize their academic standing and personal reputation, and may affect their opportunities for scholarship and invitations to honor societies. After verifying that the student has plagiarized, the teacher will notify the parents and the learning area leader and/or administrator of the incident.”

Consequences:

“The plagiarized work will receive a zero for the assignment and depending upon the circumstances, may cause a student to fail either the quarter or the course. In order to discourage further incidents all plagiarized work will be kept on file.”

Cheating:

“Students who attempt to attain passing grades through dishonest means, run the risk of scholastic failure and disciplinary action by the teacher and/or the administration. All students are expected to work within the guidelines of school policies. After verifying that the student cheated, the teacher will be responsible for notifying the parents of the incident. The student may receive further discipline.”

The use of Spanish language translation websites to translate sentences, paragraphs or other extended passages is a form of cheating and is not acceptable. Any work completed with this type of assistance will receive a grade of zero. Students may use wordreference.com the same way they would use a Spanish-English dictionary, to look up definitions of single words or idioms.

Extracurricular Activities :

- Spanish National Honor Society: Check with me for membership requirements. Spanish Honor Society offers activities open to all students.

- National Spanish Exam: Sign up in December/ Take exam in April.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

You cannot learn a language well simply by coming to class and completing assignments. Use your language with your friends. Teach your family words at mealtime, in the car, etc. Listen for Spanish words on TV, on the radio and at the store. Try to figure out what is being said

Become an observer of different ways that people do and say things, and how they treat each other. This will not only give you a better understanding of how cultures are different - even in our own community - but also of how we express those differences through language.

SO.....

Enjoy Spanish and the cultures that use it.

¡BUENA SUERTE¡
