K-8 Competency Statements (What you will see on report cards):

Kindergarten:

Develops skills through use of various media.

Identifies subject matter in a work of art.

First Grade:

Experiments with materials and tools to create a work of art.

Observes and investigates in preparation for making a work of art.

Compares images that represent the same subject.

Second Grade:

Experiments with various materials and tools to create a work of art to express personal interests.

Expresses preferences about artwork using art vocabulary.

Identifies mood in a work of art.

Third Grade:

Develops a work of art based on observation.

Elaborates and communicates on an imaginative idea with details.

Evaluates an artwork based on a given criteria.

Fourth Grade:

Explores art-making techniques and revises artwork in progress.

Interprets and analyzes art for messages.

Fifth Grade:

Develops skills and demonstrates quality craftsmanship.

Creates artist statement using art vocabulary.

Analyzes visual imagery for cultural associations.


Sixth Grade:

-Demonstrates openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods and approaches in making works of art and design

-Reflects on whether personal artwork conveys the intended meaning and revise accordingly

-Analyzes ways that visual components and or cultural associations suggested by images influence ideas, emotions, and actions


Seventh Grade:

-Demonstrates persistence in developing skills with various materials, methods, and approaches in creating works of art or design.

-Reflects on and explains important information about personal artwork in an artist statement or other format.

-Compares and explains the difference between an evaluation of an artwork based on personal criteria and an evaluation of an artwork based on a set of established criteria.


Eighth Grade:

-Demonstrates willingness to experiment, innovate, and take risks to pursue ideas, forms, and meanings that emerge in the process of art making or designing.

-Applies relevant criteria to examine, reflect on, and plan revisions for a work of art or design in progress.

-Creates a convincing and logical argument to support an evaluation of art.
