English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program's objective is to help students learn the vocabulary and grammatical structures needed in school as well as outside school. The Fred C. Underhill School ESL program in grades K-2, follows as close as possible the reading, math and science programs for the regular education.
As the ESL teacher, I help students develop language acquisition and cognitive academic language skills using proven best practices. The ESL program provides English Language Learners (ELLs) the necessary strategies to access the academic, social, and cultural aspects of the English language in the four domains of reading, writing, spelling, and listening.
Learning the English language is vital for ELL students to access the curriculum. It is equally important to continue to nurture and value the student’s original culture of origin and language.
