A-Level English Literature (AQA)
Course Lead: Angela Pritchard - angela.pritchard@sarumacademy.org
Entry Criteria: Four subjects at Grade 4 or above, including Grade 4 or above in English Literature or Language
A-Level English Literature goes deeper than GCSE, looking at how society and love are portrayed through a wide range of novels, plays and poetry from modern literature to texts written up to 500 years ago.
There is a huge importance on context and how a writer’s background, contemporaries and the society they lived in have all influenced their writing.
Along with aspects of literary theory and criticism, you will develop an understanding of the layers of meaning in literature, and how themes are introduced and explored.
You will study the following works:
F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby
Shakespeare - Othello
Alice Walker - The Color Purple
Ian McEwan - Atonement
Plus a variety of poets
You'll be assessed through one large piece of coursework and two final exams
By the end of the course, you will be responding to literary work with critical perception and sophistication.
English Literature will allow you to develop the skills needed to study written and spoken texts and also enables you to become a reflective thinker, an analytical consumer and an expressive communicator.
English Literature A-Level is highly sought-after for many University courses, and a valuable course for anyone interested in any job which requires communication skills.
