Sargent School District Excels in Academic Activities

Just because Sargent School District has a small student population does not mean that students are not offered many academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities. The Elementary School is Kindergarten through 6th grade, Junior High consists of 7th and 8th grade and the Senior High School is 9th-12th grade.
Over the last couple of months, Sargent elementary, junior high and senior high students have participated in History Fair, Science Fair, FBLA, Knowledge Bowl and FFA. Student athletes have ended their Basketball, Swim and Wrestling Seasons and moved into Baseball, Junior High Wrestling and Track. “Small but mighty” can be a motto for the Sargent School District.
Sargent students participated in the Regional History Fair at Adams State University on Saturday, January 29, 2022. Sargent had 20 junior high students and 7 senior high students compete in the competition. 21 junior/senior high students qualified for the State History Fair Competition to be held in Denver on April 30, 2022.
Sargent’s Senior High School Knowledge Bowl Team qualified for the State Competition in January and participated in the State Competition on Monday and Tuesday, March 14 and 15, 2022. The state qualifying team consists of 4 seniors, Mary Willis, Katherine Sewell, Chinmay Jayanty, Lindsey Temple and Jessica Buser; all participated in the virtual event on campus. The Knowledge Bowl team consists of 18 students on the JV/Varsity high school team. Students practice once a week during the school day.
Sargent’s Junior High School Knowledge Bowl team consists of 25 junior high students. Students participate in meets throughout the San Luis Valley and will hold the Sargent Junior High Meet on Thursday, March 31, 2022. Sargent Junior High participated in the San Luis Valley Spelling Bee at Adams State on Wednesday, February 2. 8th grader, Tanner Houser took 1st place as the San Luis Valley Spelling Bee Champion!
Sargent High School FBLA participated in the District 8 Leadership Conference on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Adams State University. All 28 members placed in the top ten of varying events. 26 members will travel to the State Leadership Conference at the Gaylord Resort in Denver on April 18-20, 2022.
Sargent High School FFA chapter president Maddie Kyffin states, “members will participate in the Regional CDE Competition in Lamar, Colorado on April 6, 2022. Members will participate in competitions such as livestock judging, floral culture, and Ag Marketing. Maddie is excited to see FFA members demonstrate their knowledge and experience in these competitions.” Sargent FFA has 46 members.
Sargent School District participated in the San Luis Valley Regional Science Fair. Students in grades 4th-12th grade participated in the virtual fair. Five elementary students received awards, with Parker Mitchell receiving the Colorado State and Science and Engineering Fair Award allowing him to represent Sargent Elementary. Sophia Mitchell and Sydney Curtis won the 2022 Logo Contest Award. All but 5 Sargent junior/senior high students received Science Fair Awards with Kyra Griffin, Addison Roepke, Dietrich Smith, Mackenzie Consula, Will Walker, Kandace Pargin, Kimberly Pargin,Catie Deacon and Chinmay Jayanty representing Sargent Secondary at the State Colorado Science and Engineering Fair, in Denver on April 7-8, 2022.
Sargent Junior High School inducted 14 seventh graders along with 10 current members on Wednesday, March 9 in the District auditorium. Congratulations to: Makenzie Consaul, Reagan Curtis, Sylvia Daughtery, Lyza Davis, Catherine Deacon, Aiden Ford, Lyla Gesink
Madeline Mitchell, Durae Naranjo, Kandance Pargin, Kimberly Pargin, Rylee Shirley, Tami Torgler, and William Walker.
Sargent High School inducted 7 new members to the chapter on Thursday, March 10, 2022 in the District Auditorium. Congratulations to: Sydney Lorentzen, Annabelle Heinemann, Giovanni Aquilar, Brooke Hoffstaetter,Jordan Rockey, Parker Ford, and Daylon Maze.
Sargent High School Winter Sports concluded with sophomore Trenton Lovelace placing 5th at the State Wrestling Tournament. The Sargent Swim Team sent Katherine and Emma Sewell to the State Swim Meet. Senior Katherine Sewell was honored with Swimmer of the Year for the South Central League for the 2021-2022 school year. Sargent Farmer Lady Basketball advanced to the Regional Basketball Tournament.
Whatever the passion of a student, Sargent School District offers a variety of academic, sports, and extracurricular activities. Good luck to all students participating in events during the 4th quarter.
