OCTOBER

Why is October Designated as "LGBTQ+ History Month" ?

The idea was developed by the first out gay high school teacher Rodney Wilson in Missouri in 1994. He chose October because the LGBTQ Marches on Washington occurred in October in 1979 and 1987. In addition, National Coming Out Day is October 11 every year.  This month is our opportunity to share LGBTQ+ lessons with our students. You'll find everything you need here to teach about LGBTQ+ history: events for teachers and students, lesson plans, primary source materials and more. Please do share your curriculum ideas back with us so we can add them to our resources here.
