Differentiated Instruction & Learning

Differentiated instruction is how teachers tailor lessons to match the individual learning styles of students. Teachers can differentiate instruction through content, process, product or learning environment.

Carol Ann Tomlinson suggests the following four methods for differentiating learning:

  • Content: determining what a student need to learn and choosing resources that will help, material delivery
  • Process: planning activities to meet different learning styles and engage students such as; audio, visual, hands-on, interactive, etc.
  • Product: how students show what they know, providing "end product" variety & choice
  • Learning environment: is the climate and flow of the classroom
