This summer, the Tri-M® Music Honor Society Chapter at Correia Middle School, advised by music educator Marc Dwyer, received a surprise: they won 2023-2024 National Chapter of the Year (Junior Division) from The National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The award was presented at the NAfME National Conference in Washington D.C. in July.
Tri-M is the only music honor society for junior/middle school and high school students in United States. It recognizes students that have gone above and beyond both academically and musically, and provides students leadership opportunities to make a difference in their community through music-based service projects.
The National Chapter of the Year Program is designed to motivate and reward chapters that perform service projects, encourage Chapter Officers to perform their duties properly, and increase awareness and interest in what other Tri-M chapters are doing.
"We are thrilled and proud to be selected as the 23-24 recipients of the Tri-M® Music Honor Society National Junior Chapter of the year. Last year was the first year our student leadership operated as a Tri-M Chapter for our school. It was a busy year filled with a variety of service projects including providing music at the Ocean Beach Toy Drive, putting on a talent show at our school, performing a recital for the PL Community at the Hervey Library, hosting an instrument petting zoo for the Point Loma Elementary schools where students could try out various band and orchestra instruments, and hosting the California Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble Festival.
In addition, we assisted with concerts at the other schools in our PL Cluster, inducted an additional 28 members into our chapter for the Spring Semester and we wrote and ratified our chapter bylaws.
We believe we won this honor due to the variety of service projects that served our school, cluster, and San Diego Community. We believe these projects helped recruit, and retain, students in our cluster music programs but also allowed us to make strong ties and relationships with other community organizations in our area."

Correia's Got Talent
The Tri-M National Chapters of the Year (Junior and Senior) receive engraved permanent service plaques along with their Chapter of the Year Scholarship awards ($1,000 for the Senior Division and $800 for the Junior Division). Scholarships must be used to fund a professional development activity for the chapter.
"We are all excited about the $800 scholarship award and we are using this to attend the Disney Leadership Workshop on September 12. This workshop will help us build stronger leadership skills that we can hopefully use over the course of the year."

Leadership the Disney Way
In the Disney Imagination Campus’ youth leadership development program, students interact with Disney leaders, engage in leadership activities, encounter problem-solving scenarios, and discover their own personal leadership style.
"This year our goals are to continue and improve upon many of the events we did last year. In addition, we hope to further build ties within our PL Community so that they can better learn what Correia Music has to offer and maybe even offer our program support!"
