CHECK YOUR MOOD
The teen years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for teens, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age, and the past decade has seen teen suicide rates double. In addition to these challenges, students and families are facing increased stress and isolation due to COVID 19 and sheltering in place.
To proactively address this issue and comply with Assembly Bill No. 2246 which requires each school and education agency serving grades 7-12 to adopt a policy on pupil suicide prevention, Clairemont High School is partnering with San Diego Youth Services HERE Now program to provide a virtual “Check Your Mood Week” filled with discussions about emotions and ways to help themselves and their friends.
We hope that you and your family will take advantage of this opportunity to help learn how to monitor and assess your emotional well-being.
- 1/28/21 Parent Zoom Presentation at 5:30PM
San Diego Youth Services will conduct a presentation for 9th grade families. The purpose of this annual event is to engage and encourage San Diegans to monitor and assess their emotional well-being. Parents must sign up for this event using the link below.

CHS HOSTING THE PSAT FOR ALL JUNIORS
We wanted to provide you with an update regarding the PSAT/NMSQT exam that is currently scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Based on the number of students taking the assessment, the County health and safety guidelines require that the exam be held outdoors. Unfortunately, the current forecast for next Tuesday anticipates a winter storm with rain and high winds. As a result, there is the possibility that San Diego Unified may cancel the exam. On Monday, January 25, district staff will determine if PSAT testing administration will be canceled due to weather conditions. If the exam is cancelled, a message will be sent to all test takers on Monday and the district will offer an alternate Spring administration of the SAT that students can participate in at no cost and still qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
In the event that the PSAT/NMSQT exam is held next Tuesday, we are asking students to adhere to the following health and safety guidelines.
Exam Start Time: 9:00 am
Exam Duration: 4 hours
Arrival Times: In order to allow for social distancing, we are asking that students arrive on campus based on the staggered times listed below:
- Last Names A-H 8:00 - 8:15 am
- Last Names I-P 8:15 - 8:30 am
- Last Names Q-Z 8:30 - 8:45 am
Safety Procedures: Students must wear a mask at all times while on campus. All students will need to complete a health questionnaire or Clear Pass before coming to campus.
Check-In: Students are to park in the main parking lot and check in at the homeside ticket booth located in the cul-de-sac on the west end of the parking lot.
Covid Testing
- It is recommended that students get COVID tested this week. CHS staff will not be requiring proof of COVID test results at check in. The county has free tests or you may check with your child’s health care provider for their options. https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/2019-nCoV/testing.html
- Students who test positive CANNOT participate in the PSAT administration. All students will need to complete a health questionnaire or Clear Pass before coming to campus.
Questions? Please contact your school’s coordinator or district coordinator ramato@sandi.net

ATHLETICS
CIF TIERING
Good Morning Chieftains,
I wanted to share this graphic with you so that you had a visual of what we are going to be dealing with starting in the next couple of weeks.
The only Season 1 sports that are allowed to start on Feb 1st in a CIF capacity are Cross Country and Swim and Dive. The coaches names are Coach Pradel(XC) and Coach Carlon(S&D). Their emails are nepradel@gmail.com and stephaniecarlon@yahoo.com. If you have sport specific questions please direct them to the coaches.
Once the stay at home order has been lifted Field Hockey will be able to practice as a CIF team with social distancing, etc. and all sports in the Purple Tier will be able to hold competitions. Once we reach the Red Tier then Field Hockey can start playing competitions and when March 13th reaches us then Baseball, Girls Lacrosse and Softball will be able to start practicing as CIF teams and holding competitions(Once in Season 2). Once we are in the Red Tier then all Orange teams will be allowed to practice social distanced, etc.
I understand that this might be confusing for some so if you have any questions please reach out to me at anowak@sandi.net
As you can see looking at Season 2 Girls Golf starts 2/8 and Boy’s Golf, Co-ed Tennis and Track and Field start 2/15. These sports have been pushed forward for practices by CIF and they will be able to start practicing on those dates. Competitions for these sports will remain relatively stable moving into Season 2.
Again, if you have questions please reach out to either myself or the coaches.
Thanks everyone,
Alf

CHS Player's Creed
It is the mission of the CHS athletics program to teach our student-athletes principles that will guide them for the rest of their lives. CHS athletics isn't just about better athletes, but better people. That is why we are so excited to launch our new CHS Player's Creed (see below). In collaboration with the CHS Athletic Leadership council and various stakeholders, the CHS Player’s Creed was developed to outline what we believe it means to be a CHIEF. Every student participating in athletics at CHS, as well as their parent/guardian will be required to sign the CHS Student-Athlete Contract which states the following:
As a student-athlete at Clairemont High School you have the privilege of being part of a memorable and life changing experience. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, it is the expectation of the CHS admin team and Athletic Director that all who participate in athletics actively work to model character and integrity of the highest quality in the classroom, on the court/pool/field, and in our community. By signing this contract, you agree to strive to live a life worthy of emulating by exhibiting Courage, Humility, Integrity, Endurance, and Focus in all that you do.
