SDUSD VACCINE MANDATE UPDATE
The following communication from SDUSD District Leadership regarding the vaccine mandate for students ages 16 and up went out to all families last Friday:
As education leaders, we believe strongly that all students should be in school. That is why we are working to create the safest possible learning environments for all students, despite the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in the nation. Now that safe and effective vaccines are available to all students over the age of 5, we continue to urge everyone eligible to get vaccinated. We are also committed to a robust testing program to stop the spread of the virus within our school communities.
Last fall, the Board of Education adopted a strict vaccine mandate that would have required all 16-year-old students, as of Nov. 1, 2021, without a medical or IEP exemption to be vaccinated in order to attend in-person instruction starting January 24th. On December 20th, the Superior Court ruled that we cannot implement our vaccine mandate, a decision which we plan to appeal.
At a hearing yesterday, the plaintiffs (Let Them Choose) asked the judge to order the district to stop communicating to parents about its commitment to a vaccination requirement, and the judge flatly rejected that attempt.
After the judge summarily denied Let Them Choose’s motion, there was some discussion regarding the preparation of a judgment, which we do not yet have. During that discussion the judge characterized his ruling in a way that would require the district to seek a stay of enforcement, and the district intends to seek a stay so that its efforts, applauded by Judge Meyer, can continue. Indeed, Judge Meyer stated in open court that he hopes the district will be successful in obtaining a stay.
In the meantime, we remain focused on ensuring that our schools continue to be healthy and safe for our students and staff, even though we cannot currently implement the vaccine mandate. We will maintain our effort in ramping up COVID testing, especially for those who are not vaccinated. Many have asked if we are requiring athletes and other extracurricular participants to be vaccinated. Currently, we do not plan to require a vaccine for this group of students however, we will continue to encourage all eligible students to get vaccinated and plan for the potential that the Court of Appeal will allow us to move forward in the future.
NEW CHS ELECTIVES WEBSITE
Electives are an important part of the high school experience. They provide students the opportunity to explore their their passions, discover new interests, narrow down the subjects they’re not that interested in, and get the most out of their educational experience. With the articulation process right around the corner, students will begin selecting the courses they would like to take next school year. In an effort to learn more about all the electives CHS has to offer, Mr. Sparks's Video Production students created the following website. Be sure to check it out!
During the fall semester, the CHS Site Governance Team reviewed the school's Dress Code. After gathering input from a variety of stakeholders, including students, staff, and parents, the SGT made a number of revisions to the Dress Code. The updated Dress Code will go into effect on Monday, January 24 at the start of the second semester. Please see Clairemont's new Dress Code below:
CLAIREMONT HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODE
Clairemont High School believes that the primary responsibility for a student’s attire resides with the student and parent/guardian. The school and district are responsible for seeing that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any students, and that student attire supports a purposeful academic learning environment.
In addition, as a Linked Learning Demonstration site, the academic program at Clairemont High School centers on preparing students for work-based learning experiences (i.e., Mock Interviews, Job Shadowing, Guest Speakers, Mentor Program, and Internship Program). As a result, student attire should foster a sense of professional confidence and support students in being focused and ready for the demands of work-based learning experiences.
STUDENTS MUST WEAR:
Bottoms such as pants, sweatpants, shorts, skirts, dresses, or leggings
Shirts with sleeves or shoulder straps that cover the entire torso
Footwear (* for student safety, athletic shoes are required for PE and sports participation)
STUDENTS MAY WEAR:
Religious headwear at any time
Hoodie sweatshirts (no hoods in class)
Leggings, as long as they are of a completely non see through material
Ripped jeans, as long as underwear and buttocks are not exposed
Hats and sunglasses outdoors during passing periods, at lunch, and at teacher discretion indoors
STUDENTS MAY NOT WEAR:
Violent images or language
Images or language depicting or advertising drugs or alcohol (or any illegal item or activity)
Profanity, sexually explicit images, or pornography
Images or language that creates an intimidating environment (such as gang related images or language)
Visible underwear
Beachwear (including bathing suits and tube tops)
Sleepwear (including pajamas, robes, and/or slippers)
Helmets or headgear that obscures the face (except as a religious observance)
SPECIAL EVENTS:
On certain special occasions, students may be asked to “Dress to Impress” in professional or business casual attire for school sponsored events such as Mock Interviews, Mentor Meetings, Fieldtrips, Job Shadows, and Internships. To support students, Clairemont High does an annual Professional Clothing Drive where industry and community partners donate professional clothing that students can choose to take home and keep for free.
Students not wearing appropriate school attire will be required to change into school issued t-shirts or shorts/sweats or may be required to adjust apparel accordingly. Parents may be contacted to provide students with appropriate attire. Borrowed clothing needs to be returned at the end of the school day and students will be given their clothing back to take home. Any further incidents could be subject to administrative disciplinary actions
CHS ROBITICS RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION
The 2022 Robotics Season kicked off on Sat, Jan 8th, 2020 with the "big reveal" of our challenge, Rapid React. The Robotics team now has 10 weeks to design, build and program our robot to shoot and score! We will complete in the San Diego First Robotics Regionals on March 18-20, 2022 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
This year we had a surprise donation of $10,000 from Rogue Society, with the objective of bringing robotics to more students. THAT COULD BE YOU! A company principal had found a home on their high school robotics team and wanted to give back! Thank you Rogue Society! The Clairemonsters Robotics team invites ALL students to join our team, especially Freshmen and Sophomores. We are an open team, meaning we have students from other schools with no Robotics team and home schooled students. Join with a friend!.
Robotics Meetings:
Tuesday, Lunch, room 406 ( to Plan!)
Weds, 0800-0930, room 405 (The maker space!)
Fri, 3:45-5:5:15
Sat, 0900-3:00 (end time varies.)
There are numerous days and times so students who play sports or other activities can find a time to help build. You don't have to come to every meeting. Commit to one or two and come when you can.
For more info contact Mattie Wilson, co- Captain/President or Rosette Kinney, Vice President or come by during meet times.
WEEKLY COVID TESTING UPDATE
As of last Monday, January 3, 2022, Clairemont will no longer be partnering with UCSD to provide Covid testing to students and staff. Instead, CHS (and all SDUSD high schools) will be working with Responsive Lab Partners. As a result, there are a few changes to the Covid testing process that you should be aware of.
Responsive Lab Partners may only test students who have completed the testing Opt-In process which must be done in PowerSchool. Parents who have yet to complete this process can find Information on how to do so HERE.
Students and staff no longer need to make appointments to be tested. Those who wish to be tested may go to the CHS testing location (CHS auditorium) at a time that is most convenient for them.
Since appointments are no longer required, students will not be pulled from class. Instead, students who require a negative test to participate in athletics will now be responsible for going during open hours each Monday. Teachers have been made aware of this. If you have a student-athlete who needs to be tested, please encourage them to set a reminder in their phone so that they can be tested and continue to practice and play.
Hours of operation are as follows:
Every Monday in which school is in session from 9:00 - 11:00 am and 12:00 - 4:30 pm.
Covid testing remains mandatory for unvaccinated student-athletes. However, vaccinated athletes are welcome to test for screening if they would like.
For non-student-athletes, the testing is free and optional.
